Never thought to use 4g64 pistons before. Is there any stock ones that would make about a 8.7 to1 ratio?

Any NT piston is too weak to put up with much abuse from forced induction. I seem to recall that the 4G64 DOHC pistons have a thinner dome than the stock 1G NT pistons.

If you're going to the hassle of boring the block, etc, why not use a decent set of pistons?

It is what I call a lack of funds. I get a deal on boring, It will be like 60.00 for all the holes. Good pistons$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Here some answers to some questions. The 4g63 /T intake manifolds have alot bigger ports than the 4g61 has. The differnces between the 2 intakes/head port size is as vast as the differnce from a 1g 4g63 head vs. a 2g head . They will bolt up but the ports are gonna be way out of wack. Also the 4g61t lacks piston oil squiters if I rember right. Using cast pistons with the lack of squiters, + boost with higher than stock comp ratio with pump gas in a street engine is a total time bomb combo. As many have stated u will be alot better off going the 4g63t route.

Hey all, I lurk, but never post.

I have 9.0:1 CAST N/A pistons in my Galant VR-4. Running the stock IC, injectors, and MAFS. Currently set at 13psi on a 14b. I have had NO problems with this setup. I run my car hard sometimes, never had a problem. I did this due to cost measures as compared to getting the 2G/1G piston/rod combo. The car is A LOT more driveable when not in the boost, and I get 13psi by 2700rpm. I'd say run an IC if you were gonna do it, as I get knock at anything over 13psi.

I don't mean to step on any of the other guys' toes, as they all have good points. What are the differences in the turbo/na pistons? Are they different designs? Are they made of different materials? Mitsubishi Evo VIII's are running 8.8:1 pistons stock on an Evo 16g. That's pretty high compression for a turbo car.

So yes, in my opinion, you could run the N/A's. Get a good IC or run water injection. Then again, 8.0:1 is great for making lots of boost. The answer to your question really is:
What are you gonna do with the car? Then, go from there.

The crown on the NA piston is alot thinner than a turbo piston. The ring lands are also alot skinnier.

I know this is a vintage post but I'm new to the site I want to know how did it turn out for you ? Did you use the 2G piston in the 61 block ? I'm thinking about doing the same setup.

Just mentioning that some of the guys in this thread haven't visited the site since they posted these comments, or shortly there after. Some posts were made in 2004 when I joined here 11 years ago. fatBastard last logged in early 2011. The guy before him was 2010 sometime.
