Finally focusing on the suspension.

I feel that the suspension is too stiff as it sits. I'm not getting any visible squat or rear transfer. I'm hoping an overhaul of the suspension setup on the car will improve my 60 foots, the best being 1.6x.

Currently I have Koni yellow struts on the front with DSS hypercoils. The rear has KYB GR2's I believe with the same DSS coilovers, but the helper springs are bottomed out.

How exactly do I go about figuring out what spring rates I need, spring length, and so on?

I think part of the problem is the 60 foot is right at the 1-2 shift, but there has to be improvement in the suspension setup.

Do you know what the length is of your current springs, at least?

Oh yeah, forgot about that. I'd have to measure, but I bought this kit from jmauldin way back in the day which I think started out as the "DSS Mirage turbo" coilover kit. So Mike should know already!

I've tried talking to him about those kits before. His memory is fuzzy, as this was like 15 years ago at least. He says he has everything written down somewhere. He helped me out when I was trying to put together a suspension setup for the Eclipse, and I'm pretty happy with the results....but he's no drag racer, so I don't know what he'll have to say. I emailed him on your behalf.

I would say you need better dampers in the rear, but not sure what you'd use. Which GR2's are on there now? Are they for a CSM, or a DSM?

Mike @ DSS wants to know your spring rates. He doesn't remember what he was using back in the day. Apparently the spring rate is engraved or written on the springs somewhere, but you'd have to take them off the car to see it. You may be able to get away with just putting some stiffer shocks in the rear, like some AGX's or something, if you can find them, or Koni Yellows. I think they may all be discontinued now, but I'm not sure.

Honestly, you may be at the point with this car where conventional suspension isn't going to cut it. What are other guys doing with crazy powerful setups, like on DSM's or EVO's? You may want to at least consider converting to a legit coilover setup with a threaded strut tube and everything.

I read somewhere Devin was running standard Eibachs and AGX's when he ran 8's on the 35R so maybe there's something I'm missing with this whole thing.

I'm guessing there probably isn't enough suspension travel in the rear, if you're running 1g AWD stuff...this could explain why it feels so stiff. Putting in stiffer struts will be the cheapest/easiest thing you can do at this point.

Mike also said to measure the height from the ground to the center of the bolt at the "toe eliminator", and also from the ground to the center of the rear driveshaft at the hub, at the center of the wheel.

If you push on the rear trunk area the car barely moves.

Rough estimate is 11 1/4" from ground to center cap of wheel and 8 1/4" from ground to center of the rear toe adjustment bolt.

That's how Dan's Colt is also, and he only has GR2's on it (not sure if they're for a DSM or CSM). Either way, the car is getting bouncy on you, so that would tell me that you don't have enough shock in the rear.

I relayed that into to Mike, we'll see what he says.

Mike says to try raising the rear up as high as it will go and see what happens.

Yeah it pretty much is. The helper springs on the top of the coils are totally compressed.

Yes I know it is twisted. That will be fixed over winter.

Maybe I need a taller spring? I should probably just send in all four to Mike over the winter and have him replace/re-do it all.

I'm running Agx dsm rear shocks and ground control coilovers, just switched to a 8" 200 pound spring in the rear. Ended up with a 1.5 60' on my first pass. I basically just copied what Matt Step was running, think he hit 1.4's on that setup.
