I am asking this simple question to get a few experienced opinions on the subject. My fuel tank is rusting out, and needs professional attention or replacing. I cleaned it almost a year ago, even coated it with a fuel tank liner kit from summit racing. Now the tank looks like the coating was never there. I am thinking; if I replace the fuel tank with something other than oem, why not do a fuel cell in the hatch like the AWD guys do. If I do that, I would work my way to go AWD. I like the thought of no wheelspin, but is the added weight worth it when driving in the twisties? I love how my colt feels like a go-cart on steroids. I think I have a very light car, since the chassis I have is a super base model, and I have done a little weight reduction. With my current setup, and after final tuning, it should make 300-330 at the wheels. I have no intention with going for more power at this time due to running a 1.6. So what do you guys think, lightweight FWD or add weight for AWD? Thank you in advance, Justin |

even with the awd stuff added it will weigh less than a talon or eclipse... and coming out of twisties under more power (no fwd wheel spin) is alot more fun. Steve |

Here comes the odd-ball in the bunch, just get an after market fuel tank for a few hundred and you're set. I'd say at least half (myself included) of the people that tear into their cars for the awd swap give up on it and part the car out. Keep that in mind. But hey, if you have the means to do it then go for it. |

I would also lean toward staying fwd. My car is about where you want to be, full suspension, brakes, 311whp and fwd. I have also thought about going awd since I already cut out the spare tire tub and flat floored the rear. I'd say it all depends on how much work you can do yourself, how much you're willing to spend and truthfully if you will see it through. In my case, my car's primary function is good mileage as a daily driver. That's why I kept the 1.6 instead of doing the 2.0 swap. So I'm gonna stick with fwd and save myself time money. |

Having the ability or the place to do the work is not the issue. I work at a ricer shop, lol. The only real issue with going AWD is it takes time and money away from my real toy (4g63-is300). Today I was looking at a few "spare" sheets of aluminum at the shop and was thinking "free-ish" fuel cell, but some assembly required. Overall the main goal with the colt is to get good mpg for the daily commute. However, the commute includes some fun back roads, so a fun car is a must. Lol don't get me wrong, I love how the car feels now. Especially with the new bilsteins up front. Here is another question, has anyone used he AWD rear subframe for just the IRS? Using axle cups to keep the rear bearings from separating? Just thinking. I love how much customization is needed on these little cars, no 2 are alike. Not like bpu cars. Mirageman, I still have that box of mounts and harness bits for you. |

Still keep the weight down, fix the fuel tank rust issue, and improve handling. Jot not improving traction. Time to find a rear end. |

T56 out of a gto. That 6speed weighs more than the engine. At least they hold power. When I get more done, I will post pics here. |

I would do the AWD swap; the power out of the twisties is the most fun part. If you were closer I would take you for an uphill ride on a winding road. Even in the rain the car will mash you into the seat. it puts a huge smile on my face every time. @mirageman: Aftermarket tank?!? For an import? Please tell about this source! |

When I bought my 89 Colt it had been sitting for about 5 years and the tank, sending unit and fuel pump were all rusted. I bought a replacement tank on ebay for around $150. This was in 05/06 but I'm assuming you can still get one. |
