so after research it looks like the w4a33-1 trans is the same from 91-98.(other than the front motor mount part for the 2g's).. is this correct? also can u use any year converter with any year auto trans? like say a 96 trans with a 93 converter.. or a 92 trans with a 97 converter? I was told the 2g converters are better cause there larger.. is this true?

I know I dont have to worry about the motor mount part on a 2g trans..cause I have the one on the block. just seeing if I can widen my search when looking for a trany.. thanks

Steve

Auto specific. The mounting points on the top of the case are different.

Edit:
Woah there, you completely changed your title and questions now my response makes no sense!

No, the 2g converters are different which they are the locking style and not the same as 1gs. Also the flexplate is different as well.

From what I could find real quick was that the 97 and up have different gearing changes made to the Tranny and Transfer Case and 91-96 all have the same gearing. But, like it was said above, 2G and 1G Torque Converters and different. 2G have lock up converters and the 1G are non lock up. So you can not use 1G in a 2G and vise versa.

so I can not use a 91 converter in a 96 trans..even if im using it with the 91 tcu?

reason I brought this thread back is.. I have a 91 auto trans but needs rebuilt..have a chance to get a good deal on a 96 auto trans.. everywhere I read the trans are the same..so im assuming putting the 1g torque converter in it and the 1g tcu it should work like a normal 1g right? or am I miss reading the info?

Nope, bolt pattern for the flex plate is different and 2g have a "locking style converter" which won't work on a 1g trans.

There are a few options out there for 1g converters.. From personally experience, the 1g auto transmissions are quite robust to say the least. ( 18 passes over 140mph so far) and they are a easily found.

If you are looking for a converter here are some options as pertained to a 1g:
IPT,
Hughes
level 10

However you can contact any local transmission shop that restalls converters, and they would most likely be able to help you out.

The nice thing about the 2g auto is the ability to run billet converters i.e the precision piece.

so Ive been doing alot of research so now my next question is about axles... Ive read that the 1g fwd..awd and 2g fwd intermediate shafts are the same... when I looked up for the axles at autozone dot com.. the auto and manual axles come up with the same part number...but when I went into the store they told me the D/S was the same..but P/S was diff between auto and manual.. can anyone confirm which is correct?..this is for a 91 awd dsm.

trying to gather all the parts so I can do my swap after the first of the year.

thanks
Steve

The driver's axle is different because it's a 2 piece axle, so it's shorter than the passenger side. Autozone is only going to sell the axle that has a female input that goes on the male splines on the 2 piece that has a carrier bearing on it. So yes they are different if its awd or fwd.

if you re read my post above.. the D/S are the same axle between auto and manual (confirmed in store)... I have the halfshaft. (which the 1g fwd and awd and the 2g fwd are the same part)

I will rephrase my question..
online it says the P/S axles are the same but when I go into the store they say there diff.. I am looking for someone who has done the 1g dsm auto to 5 speed or vice versa swap to confirm or deny that the P/S are the same or diff.

thanks for your input tho.

Steve
