I just bought an awd tsi for parts. I was told that the two driverside tires were slashed. I pulled the rear off to change it, filled it up for shits and giggles, both tires hold air
. I noticed when I had the one rear tire up that I could not turn it at all (only one wheel up, tranny in neutral). I didnt look into it too much due to lack of time, but I realize the brakes might of been really tight. There probably isnt a way to tell if the rear is welded or if a spool piece is in it (if they exist for these cars) unless the cover is popped off right?
Now, I had one front wheel off to look at the brakes and stuff, dual piston front calipers and slotted/drilled rotors apparently. I could turn the one front wheel a bit either way, maybe only an 1/8th of a turn. Is there a way to tell what it has for a center diff? Whether its a spider or spool? If the only way is to pop the cover off, what do I look for in there? I just want to know what tranny to send away now to get built up.
The throttle cable is broken so the car cant be driven normally with 3 pedals, but I did use the cruise control cable for a hand throttle by the mirror. Makes for a different driving experience for sure, but atleast I can move the car in and out of the shop and into the compound for the week. The car also came with a 3'' full exhaust, which is useless to me, so I am going to try and sell it locally because of shipping. It was a vandalism special, only two panels left on the car that are good, one of them being the hatch. I found out after I got the car that it did have a stroker motor and a few other goodies. Since then the car has had 3 owners and each one has taken goodies from it and started returning it to stock, I am curious about the drive line stuff though.
