IIRC, someone on the board was running an awd trans as a fwd in their csm. I simply want to know if the awd trans clears everything on a 3g(w/o transfer case of course)

Jason, do you remember who it was that was running this on our board?

See, I knew someone had. How long did you run it and did you just leave the whole t-case shaft in there?

Awhile.

Shaft stays in. You need to remove the viscous coupler, install a VCU eliminator to *hold* the xfer case shaft from falling out, and run a welded center diff.

All of this can be done with the trans in the car.

Which "VCU Eliminator" are you refering to? Most VCE's that people use are just welded/cut down VC's and they can not be used with a welded center diff (unless they were welded at the same time).

The simplest way is to use a regular center diff with a VCE (but those should not be used on cars make much more than 500ft*lbs or so.)

For anything with more torque, you can weld the center diff (or use a spool) and then stick on a regular VC.

Yeah I meant to say a welded center diff with *something* (vce) to hold the xfer case shaft such as a ball bearing and hose clamp so it doesn't slide out when you pull the xfer case.

So, I can use a stock awd trans with a vce without any other mods done to the trans correct?

No. If you remove the xfer case you won't go anywhere.

All the power will be routed though the back

Yes, but a VCE will lock your center diff! So it will function as a FWD tranny!

Years ago, I came up with the first cutdown/welded VC and sold it for over a year (calling it a Solid Copling, get it, as opposed to Viscous Coupling ;)). But then someone coppied it and sold it as a VCE. Their name was more popular so it became known as a VCE (even I called it that).

I used a VCE to turn my car into 4x4 (as apposed to AWD) for better drag racing launches. But I hated 4x4 mode, so I would use a switchable JDM transfer case to turn it into FWD.

I would also put it into FWD to dyno it on the 2WD dynos (before AWD dynos became popular). VCE has always worked great for me!

But years later, I saw how center diff can fair on a high torque car (it snaped right at the VCE! :o ). So I had to change the way that sold them: for dyno purposes only!

Later, I came up with with another trick to turn AWD tranny into RWD for some drifting 8)

Weld the center diff, remove the front axles, and plug up the holes?

Thats almost what I did, except I just stuck axle cups in the trans. Was running full RWD. I flew off the freeway the first time I floored it. Went into the middle grassy median spinning a few times.

This is the obvious, but rather labor intensive method. Plus, you need to butcher both axles (using cups, but not the axles).

My method utilized only a modified center diff. Front axles were still in the car. ;)
