well gents, looks like i get to play with a genuine xtrac trans from a rally team. a customer picked this beauty up with a whole crapload of xtra parts like gears and input shafts and countershafts and the like... well i got a couple of pics for y'all

note the lack of syncros..... holy hell those are dog engagement gears!!!!

haha for sale... sorry guys but i'll probably be needing most of the xtra parts... oh the clutches won't work on a normal dsm tranny... the xtrac trans has a taller bell housing by 13mm, and the input shaft has a much larger shaft size, like 7/8" or so, as well as being 13mm longer in the splines.

it came with like 4 different front final drives and a whole xtrac rear diff with corresponding pinion/ring gear combos for different racing...

geez i was looking over the gear ratios>>> from memory
1st is like 2.04
2nd is 1.5
3rd is 1.09ish
4th is .95 or .98
5th donno haven't got that far yet
HOLY HELL THATS CLOSE!
the front final drive is close to a 2g awd at 3.895ish...

but i can just change out the front output/ring gear combo and match up the rear ratio for lower overall gearing...

man soooo many combos

holy f-in sweet. I saw a rally art gear box a few years ago with a bunch of extra parts for like 9k on dsmtrader. Me= jealous

One of my best buds back home came up on a Ralli-Art dog box a couple years ago. There used to be a pretty good rally shop in the area called TAD Motorsports, and the dog box was used in an EVO II rally car that they built. He had to do quite a lot of fab work to get it to fit in his 2g AWD, but he managed to make it happen.

That thing was a BEAST when it came to high-RPM shifts. 9,500rpm shifts and it didn't even care. Not to mention the gearing was so close that his massive GT42R stayed in-boost between shifts and was right back in the powerband when he got into the next gear. Sadly, he somehow managed to destroy 1st gear on it, and he couldn't find replacement parts anywhere for it, so now he has a $5,000 paperweight in his garage. :-?

from what i understand, at one point in time shep wanted this particular trans , whether it was for his dog box development or not. The cost of making a helical cut dogmission as opposed to a straight cut dogmission is waaaaay too prohibitive, thus is why shep/Magnus have straight cut gears.

ps this is all hearsay, just what i've been told, it could all be BS about shep wanting this....

Straight cut is technically much better for your trans case, so I imagine that is another reason they did straight cut gears. Helical cut dog gears would be the shit though. None of the whine and all of the power holding fun.

AFAIK the only reason to use straight cut gears is if the material being cut is too hard to be helical cut. Otherwise it would be helical cut every time given the advantages primarily being stronger.

Anyone notice the big gaps between the dogs? That would explain why vehicles with these trans sound like a bucket of bolts rattling when they idle.
