so like 2 years ago i picked up an awd trans, xfer case, 4 bolt rearend and propellershaft from a guy who was parting out a lazer. Just recently i decided to clean and disassemble the trans and i noticed some non-W5M33 stuff going on...
-first off, it was labelled a KM225
-it had no reverse syncro, but a stop plate much like the switchable awd trans from the galants, and the km210s.
-the viscous coupler has a grove in it much like the switchable transmissions.
-i haven't pulled apart the counter shaft to check for dual 2nd gear synchros, but everything is the same as a 1g/2g gear set.

some pics...
blurry pic of part number on inner cover
Image
same
Image
bell housing.... no "w5m33" going on here
Image
2g VC and unknown VC, notice grove near top on right VC

PS: can anyone ID this front diff? i think its a clutch type, KAAZ comes to mind.
Image

so anyone have any insights into this trans?

cheers
phil

Your pics of the diff are useless for ID'ing unfortunately. We need a clear shot down the hole on the side of the diff (if you can see worm gears down there then you have a Quaife style ATB). You will see the clutches if it is a clutch-pak LSD.

I can't help with the rest of Q's about the AWD tranny.

As far as I know, no 1G DSM-style trannies had a reverse synchro.

While you have it apart. Count the front diff Ring gear.

US has 59 teeth. and some other JDM trans has 63. This will cause LOTS of problems. believe me. I went through it.

technically its not really a synchro, the FSM calls it a "reverse brake ring" and it is part of the input 5th gear assembly. note that the first pic has the input shaft oiling plate but does not have the "wave spring" and "reverse brake cone" like a normal dsm trans.

as far as the diff goes... its a clutch type and that's all i know... oh well it's good enough for me, especially when it's pro bono.

updates as well: the input shaft sleeve where the thowout bearing rides on is broken... time to whip out the ol' TIG... or try a good 2g clutch case...

cheers
phil

PS i'm working on a 1G style Xtrac awd trans and it's fricken bitch! helical cut dog engagement gears, triple plate clutch ass'y
oh yeah all the gears are genuine mitsu parts, with the bags and part numbers on em.
i'll work on some pics for yous guys...

my VC has the groove in it as well.

looks to me like a KM221 type trans, the only way to know for sure is look at the centre diff, it should be totally different to the W5 series and get its drive from the end of the intermediate shaft, not the centre like the W5's
