i found a 92 tsi awd today in a junk yard with the whole rear drivetrain and driveshaft still in it. it has a manufacture date of july 91. i am kinda new to the dsm stuff and was wondering if this is a 4bolt rear? is there any visual way to tell? it did have the viscous lsd sticker on it.

its only gonna cost me 140$ for the entire assembly and 13$ for the driveshaft. even though i don't even have the car i want to use this on yet, i'll probably go ahead and get it. i would just like to know if its a 4 bolt.

thanks

If it's a '92, then it's a 4-bolt rear end. That was the first year for the 4-bolts. Make sure the car has a manual transmission though, because if it was auto you'll have problems with the gear ratios. $140 is a very good price.

err, it was an auto tranny. does that mean i couldn't use it with a manual trans because of the front/ rear ratio difference?

Yep. It's useless.

Yeah, I highly recommend a new(er) subframe then what I have. This one is a little tired.

3barmirage,

It's probably worth pulling the 4-bolt rear/axles/cups and selling them on dsmtrader. Even if it is auto there's someone out there that probably needs one!

Couldn't you just swap out the gears from a manual rear into the auto housing and keep the 4 bolt? Thought I read somewhere you can swap the ring gear or something.
