I'm a dsm vet, and a csm newb. So I've got my mind set on making a n 89-92 awd colt or mirage. I've got a 1g talon donor and have compared the specs to a csm. They're nearly identical as far as tracks, widths, etc. My question is....has anyone just cut out the front inner fenderwells/strut towers and rear floor pan/strut towers on a dsm and welded it in to a 89-92 csm 3 door? This seems to me to be the easiest way of doing the conversion. Plus there aren't any "custom" parts-you just order all dsm suspension parts when needed. I've got plenty of fab/clipping experience, and my own shop with everything I need to do the job. Just seeing if anyone's done this yet....or if there may be something that would make it impracticle that I haven't thought of yet that has kept anyone from trying to pull it off.

No one has done it that way. Just make your AWD motor mounts,
cut out the fwd rear suspension, and weld in contact points for the rear subframe. There's over 3 years of info on this site alone about doing the swap, and a great pictorial on www.lilevo.com [he also sells a dvd on how to do the swap] Look around some and you'll eventually get all the info on how to fab up everything.

Best of luck

Of course, there aren't any custom parts when you do it that way... except for the custom inner fenderwells/strut towers and custom rear floor pan/strut towers.

As others have mentioned, it would seem that most people (if not all on this board) just cut up, and adapt (weld) the existing floorpan. BUT... I would like to see someone try to adapt an AWD floorpan from a DSM. I would think it would help if you have some background/experince in welding rear clips and the desire/ability to drill out probably 100-200 (or more) spotwelds.

If you have a junker AWD DSM shell, you should try to drill out the floorpan and see how difficult it might be, befor you cut into your CSM

Just so you know where I'm coming from, I'm actually planing the same thing on the 3/S and Diamante platflorm. I already have the car and a cut out floorplan from a Stealth RT/TT. But I know it will be a difficult job, so I am not looking forward to tackling it. I didn't bother drilling out the spot welds-I cut the pan out as I needed the space and I know it would take too long.

Good luck to you.

Anything is possible and I would support the idea of transplanting the whole undergut of an AWD if not just for shoots and giggles factor. I'm sure you can handle the project and it will be well worth the added strength factor that comes with installing a stiffened chassis platform that the suspension was designed for. I vote do it and post pics all through the project, because inspiration is what we like about these old Mitsubishi car platforms.

ok-found my answer..thanks for all the responses. Looks like I will be the first to attempt this. I've got the dsm but not the csm yet. I'll be documenting in depth and posting when the project gets underway so everyone take a look at the process.

If anyone cares, here are some pics of the start of the transformation. I'm taking as many pics as possible throught the entire clipping process. The silver talon in the back may not be the donor after all-I may just keep it and put a fresh motor in. I spent about a year and a half looking for a perfect condition 1g t/e/l and finally found this. Makes me cringe thinking of slicing through such a pristine 1g. But it may need to be done  . Un-clean 4g63 is what I'm getting all of the brackets from for the new motor. The fresh 4g63 has a stock crank, eagle h-beams and wiseco's with ARP everywhere-balance shafts removed, etc. Plan on having 500-550 hp with this thing. More pics to come. And if anyone's interested...I've got The pistons, rods and crank from the donor engine which are in excellent shape. Also have the factory 4g63 front cover/oil pump as seen in the pic for sale. All 6 bolt 4g63 stuff. Also have a 97 deville with 44k miles on it for sale...sorry for being such a salesman--but that's some killer miles for a 97. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1108/140 ... 08.jpg?v=0http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1359/140 ... a0.jpg?v=0http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1425/140 ... a3.jpg?v=0http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1130/140 ... 16.jpg?v=0http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1217/140 ... 02.jpg?v=0http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1130/140 ... 16.jpg?v=0http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1002/140 ... 05.jpg?v=0http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1374/140 ... da.jpg?v=0http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1003/140 ... bf.jpg?v=0
