Hey folks! My name is Brad Campbell, I am the owner of BC Performance and I joined this site to get some information on the CSM's. I picked up a '91 Colt 1.5L auto locally with the help of my friend Omar aka Blackfuse. The car got delivered to my shop two weekends ago, and the following will be a short description of its transformation to an AWD.

Here are some pictures of the car as received. It's pretty clean, but surely a deceitful shitbox!

Shortly after getting the car down to my shop I got really bored looking at it and decided to remove the old, tired, and massively underpowered 1.5L

Took last Friday night cleaning the engine bay with a toothbrush and degreaser. It's a pain in the ass, but surely a necessary evil.

Removed the dash to hack up the wiring harness. Stripped out the ECU and transmission control, leaving the chassis wiring and heater controls completely functional. Deleted all the seatbelts including the auto shoulder dealio. Picked up some racing buckets for 20 bucks a piece. Tig'd up a couple seat brackets to mount the seats without altering the floor/chassis at all.

Since I am converting the car from auto, I figured I would kill 2 birds with 1 stone, and use a DSM shifter box. I got this one from a GVR4 with 1g shifter arm. Built some custom brackets to mount the shifter box to the holes in the chassis for the auto shifter. I also ordered new cables from the stealership. Once I get them and the transmission test fitted I will need to adjust the position of one of the shifter cables on the shifter box to get the cables lined up to my liking. P.S. The large fender washers are to stiffen up the shifter box a bit, viva symborski!

Sweet progress!!!...

Brad, I presonally think that we had good progress for two weeks of work. But, also think that we just work two or three hours every other day, not full time. It is still a nice project .......

I agree with that. I am terribly slow in my conversion, but I had thought about changing the shifter to a 1gdsm. It will (should) move the gearshift a little closer to the hip. However, I had thought that I would have to cut the Colt plate and dsm plate and do a little welding to extend the front of the dsm shifter plate to line up. But geeze, as you guys point out, all I have to do is relocate my mounting point which has already been elevated to raise the shifter. Great! A little higher and closer. The 1g dsm shifter cables are a little longer to reach the setback gearshift. Thanks.

Bill, I am going to have to cut the front of the shifter plate and move the bracket for the passenger side cable a little closer to the base of the shifter arm. I bought new mirage cables thinking everything would line up perfectly, and to my dismay, the colt transmission shifter bracket is spread a little wider then the DSM one. Thus when the cables go on they would not be even, close together. I can't have this as I am super anal. If you don't understand what I am saying I will try and get some pictures to show what I am doing. I think it?s purely an aesthetic issue and that they would function fine as is? we will see!

I have a B&M 1G short shifter in my Mirage. I have to take some of the interior out for some work I am doing, so I will snap some shots of how mine is set up.
