4WD with turbo. There were no AWD Colt/Lancers until much later in the models IIRC. Was it not until the EVO's that Independant rear and or AWD was a common staple? I could be wrong, so let's put this to the test. 8)

Yeah, the cyborgs did come in mirage/colt form. And there were definitely some AWD versions. They are solid rear axle, 4 link rear suspension, not IRS like all the conversions.

The FWD mirage/colts etc have the body code c53a. The AWD ones are the c83a cyborgs and the c73a was the AWD sedans. Theres actually a few of them going around in NZ.

Thats why the front roll bar clears the transfer case on the AWD conversions, its the same as the AWD one. It also explains why there are 2 sets of rear engine mount points becasue there was a stock crossmember on the c73a and c83a models that doglegs and clears the transfer case.

Here's a few pics from various people down here in Oz.

These ones are from a genuine C83A 3 door AWD model showing part of the suspension layout:

And here are some pics of the rear suspension of a C73A AWD sedan, even though its a different body, the suspension setup is exactly the same.

That should satisfy your curiosity a bit.

I have pics of the front crossmember/tranny support, but they're on my other computer, of course. :(

Also, IIRC, until the IV, all EVO's had the solid rear axle, too.

Hmm, I hadn't heard about that. It doesn't seem like it would have a solid rear axle though, even GVR4's had an IRS, and those came before the EVOs.

Ok, A Lancer is not the same thing as an Evolution. The EVO 1 didn't come out until 1992. The car that you pictured is also non-turbo.

The Evolution is a Lancer Evolution. Not just an Evolution. Its basically a Lancer GSR with a few tweaks.

Yes, some of the old AWD lancer/Colt/Mirages were non turbo and some were.

The IRS setup appeared on the CC model Lancer i think. This coincides with the first Evo. So all Evo's are IRS AWD and the same with all the turbo AWD GSR's from the CC model onward (1992).

The pics above are of an original mitsu straight axle setup. One of our members has used a t-bird axle in his swap though.
