I'm hearing 3 bolt and 4 bolt. What do these mean exactly?.. and how much power can different rear ends hold (torque please).

Its the amount of bolts used to attach the axles to the hubs. 4 bolt rears have stronger axles and can take quite an abuse. I know Marco was still on a 4 bolt LSD at the shootout last year running 8s, not sure if he was on upgraded axles though. 3 bolt rears are hit or miss. I've seen them run 11s no problem but then I've seen them break on high 12sec cars. I'd say stick with a 4bolt LSD if you can get your hands on one.

I'm using the 3-bolt to start my set-up, you can find them for super cheep and I figured as light as our cars where I could get a little more out of it before breakage time.

Ouch,i know now that i have 3 Bolt.What does it need to swap to 4-Bolt?Someone know how much Horses or Torque the 3-Bolt take for sure without breaking?

Depends on the driver and weight of the car. I snapped a 3 bolt axle in a almost stock GVR4 with a stock clutch, But those are heavy. It all depends.

It all depends on how you drive. The thing that breaks 3-bolt axles is axle-twist. Most of the time they don't break when you launch, but when you go to shift from 1st to 2nd because you're un-loading the axle--at least, that's how I broke my 3-bolt axle on my DSM making roughly 320whp. I've seen people with less power than that break them, and I've seen people with MUCH more power run fine with them. A friend of mine had an 11-second 1g DSM on a stock 3-bolt and never broke anything.

Sounds like it's mostly the driver that determines if they snap or not.

It usually is. At a certain point the parts are just too weak, but most people break them of their own stupidity before they get to that point.

Kind of like Heel and toe downshifting, rolling into the throttle instead of just mashing it helps take care of em.

Well, people don't normally heel/toe their cars at the dragstrip. That's when they break. They don't really break when you're just going from stoplight to stoplight. There's really no concious way to be aware of if it's gonna break or not, either you get lucky or you don't.

Pretty sure 3-bolts break because of shitty stock suspension. When the car squats on a hard launch and all the bushings are crumbled away, that's what does it. Having a heavy 1G AWD doesn't help either.

I would've been comfortable running my 3-bolt forever. Stiff suspension, poly bushings, light car, no flex.

IMO it is all about the weight, I ran 11.80's@128mph on a 3 bolt and 12's for a whole summer in a 1G talon,which included track days,Hotlapping drag rentals and rallyx IMO for the $$ the 3 bolt in our lighter chassis is the MOD! If you are planning on making 400+whp you are also willing to spend some $$ on a 4 bolt that will get you going faster with less headaches.

IMO its all about the LSD more than the number of bolts connecting the CV to the cup.
