On vfaq.com I read an article about these supposed switchable transmissions and am wondering if anyone else had some info. Which rear end/ drive shaft/axle combo and hubs would work with these beasts. The tranny and trasfer case come off of 1990 jdm galant vr4's if that helps. By the way this is a turbo colt hatch im looking into installing this combo in. Thanks for any feedback in advance. :D

Sounds like a super slick question for the boys at www.galantvr4.org. Have you done a big search over there yet? (I don't mean to pester, as this is quite an interesting technical question). :D

There were a few different JDM switchable trannies out there. Only ONE of them has the proper gear ratio to work with a US rear end. There is no rear end except MAYYYBE a rear-end from a Galant GSX that will work without getting something expensively imported from JDM-land. Hubs/front axles aren't any different. I've known people who have used these trannies in 1g AWD DSM's with success, and I've known people who've used them in CSM's, but they were only FWD and just let the output shaft spin freely.

There was just a post about this on the So-Cal DSM mailing list not too long ago where it tells you which trannies work and which don't. When I get home later I'll dig it up and get you that info.

Sorry, I forgot to look it up last night. I'll dig it up later tonight. My bad.

The one I have is from a 90 galant VR4, and it worked with a 4 bolt LSD rear no problem from a DSM. All the internals are identical to a 90 DSM trans except for the locking center diff, and the tcase is obviously unique as well. Tcase chooses between FWD and RWD, the center diff can be locked or unlocked.

Yeah from what I have read the only complication can be getting the tranny with the proper gear ratios so the differential is not destroyed. But i'm just seeing what kind of info can be had on this site. Thanks for the responses guys.........anyone else feel free to chime in.

I am pretty sure you are erferring to the switchable t-case. It makes it awd to fwd by dropping a bolt. I had one a while back and sold it without using it. They break if you are making decent power I have heard but can't confirm. They are a little weaker I guess.

Taboo ran an entire season in the mid 10s with a switchable trans/tcase setup without anything going wrong. I think the fact that they are weaker is mostly a myth. I can see how it might be slightly weaker in terms of the center diff having a few more moving parts but I'll let you know how she does in the colt. I already replaced the shift forks with steel evo versions so I know they are straight. If a center diff is gonna let go there really isn't anything you can do cept for going with the shep unbreakable one.
