Post subject:  Need advice, launching fwd bfg drags at track

hey guys, heres the skinny. i have never launched a fwd car or a car with drag radials, only awd. I need help on what to do and what psi to have the bfg 225 drag radials, i am thinking this. lowering them to 16 pounds when i get to the track, drive through the waterbox and do a nice burnout till i see white smoke and have the ebrake up then let the car roll to stage. (going to practice the launch on the street) but thinking around 2k slight slip then go from there. how does this sound? my suspension is kyb gr2s with awd dsm springs and the brand new (bout 20 miles on them) bfg drag radials 225's. car mods are evo3 16g with race gas running about 23 pounds and all supporting mods 660's fmic pipes maft afc eprom with chip aeromotive fpr.

any and all help is appreciated thanks!

Roll around the box.. what i've been told is to go around the box. and just spin them to get the rocks out. No need to heat them up.

And also. Idk about 2k slip. I'd go a bit higher. I think i was going like 4-5k slip with my Dr's. Try it a few times on the street. But remember. the track is always stickier. Unless you live in southern ohio. hahahj

I agree about going around the box the first pass and see how they hook. Just do a nice little spin out to clear the rocks and debrit off the tires. With that set up I'd probably launch around 3,500 to 4K and slip the clutch a little. 2K will bog pretty hard if you get a good hook. You may need to up the rpms to around 5K if the tires are getting a good hook.

all my friends (v8 guys using bfg drags) are telling me to get them hot, i was thinking i might need to do a little more than a 2k slip, but we'll see in two days i guess! will have pics and videos as well

They are RWD with loads of torque. I believe you will get better times if you actually spin them a bit in 1st, not to mention you will break less parts. But its really a variable thing...track prep is different, tire pressures and just the way you drive all make a difference. I personally never go through the box and run 20 psi.

ok ill do one run no waterbox at 16 psi then one getting the tires hot at 16 psi and see what happens

I personally go with the John Force burnout, but whatever floats the boat. You can try both ways to see what works for you. I'd go with at least a 5k soft slip on a sticky track until you get used to launching. On the street I could go 4500rpm hard slip without much problems. Think about trying 12psi also. I'm not sure how the track is going to be prepped, so that really is the determining factor in how you are going to be able to best launch the car. Those tires hook better when they are hot though. Cold rubber becomes hard.

one word on the track prep: always shitty (ok that was two words)

I alunched mine at about 4300 rpms. Then slipped the clutch. Best 60 I ever mustered up was a 1.9. But then preceeded to spin the tires all the way to 4th gear.

IMHO...just get full slicks, or go AWD.

no track, broke an axle

Just an fyi, i went back with the drag radials but was dealing with tire pressure issues. I forgot to put the lower piece that goes under the bumper, so my driver side tire was getting more heat, and making it harder to control the tire pressure. The best I mustered was a 2.1 with about 20 psi in both tires. I found that anything under a 3.5k slip would bog, and anything over a 4.5k slip would axle hop, right around 4k was the sweet spot. Next time im going to go, I will be on 24.5x8x15 slicks, now all I gotta do is find some cheap rims that will fit!

i would say the newer they are the less heat they need. I would run 12- 16 psi in mine. They really don't hook up unless you have a welded diff or a spool in the car from my experience. Also lack of traction is relative to how much power you are trying to put to the ground. Good luck

The last time back at the track for me, I found 13 psi to be the right pressure for the DR's. But I still didn't go through the box, I just did a nice old fashion burn out and lined up. I bent my clutch fork after the first pass so I could only rev to 5k before it would pull the car forward, but I pulled consistent low 2.1's in the 60'. I also had to granny shift the 1-2 almost immediatly due the the clutch not disengaging.
