my new nitto street drag radials (NT 555R) just arrived today. the drag strip closes next weekend for the season and tomorrow looks like maybe good weather.

so my question is, do the tires need any kind of initial "heat cycle" break-in? i've got conflicting advice. some say to do a proper heat cycle on the tires when they're brand new (heat up and let cool for 24-48 hours, preferably with the car on jack stands).

others say this initial heat cycle advice only applies to circuit racing tires, not drag tires. i can just drive 90 minutes to the track and race.

any suggestions/experience. thx. (i'm off to get them mounted. :D )

I think that only works with road race tires. I say go out and use them. I have heard of wheel hops problems coming from the Nittos though.

I personally wouldn't drive 90 mins on them, they get too hot and won't last very long if you do. A good heat up in the box should be enough, they probably won't perform there best till the 3-4th run though.

yup just heat them up at the water box and you will be good to go
for some reason those tires like to snap axles on my car

thx for the feedback. i ended up doing an initial heat cycle on them by driving them on the highway for 30 minutes and then taking them off the car for a few days. here's some links:

I put on a set of brand new BG Goodrich Drag Radials, drove 60 miles to the track, did heat up in waterbox, and they worked great. Also trailered the car, heated them up before each run(2nd gear burnout) and they didn't make any difference. Just do what you have to do and go fast!!!
