Ahhh yes, those days when we all had our first car...you remember those, don't you? Mom gives you the '92 Accord, and you slap on some 18's and a eBay fartcan. Dad gives you the truck and immediately goes on an 6" lift with stock tires. Well, this months story is no different. Our very own board member, boostfreak, has been making quite a name for himself with his 1993 4g63-powered Dodge Colt. But he didn't start off there, oh no, he started a long ways away from where he is now. In fact, it all started with a 1992 Toyota Tercel that was handed down to him from his father. And like all good young boys do with a pepboys and autozone around, he stocked that beast full of, well, "rice." A baby-blue interior, dual exhaust, park bench, four TV's, three 12" subs, and enough vinyls to stretch to the moon and back later, he realized that loosing street races was no fun, even with a "pimped out ride."

He needed speed, and lots of it. But instead of turning to his tercel, which he promptly blew up with a home brewed turbo kit, he turned to a $1,500, 87,000 mile MINT 1989 Dodge Colt GT. With the 4g61t already in place, the thing put down consistant 15's, but when an ignition timing experiment went wrong, he decided it was time to go two-point-oh!. It was fun for a year and a half, and then during a race, his nose met the broadside of another car, and it was totalled.

Still feeling the "need for speed"(as Petey Pablo so eloquently put it), boostfreak started to swap his 1993 Dodge Colt in the winter of 2002. Finding it a little tricky with limited resources along the way, he still managed to pull off an awesome job, and was able to snag third place honors at the 2003 DSM shootout Bracket 2 class with consistent 12.7's @ 109mph. All this was done on stock turbo, stock fuel, no fuel control, 2.5 inch exaust, and a set of slicks.

As the mods and the ponies started to check in, the trannies decided to start checking out. To date, he's been through 10+ clutch and tranny setups, 4 speed, 5 speed, cable and hyrdraulic. Using his words describes it best as, "If you can bolt it to a 4g63, it was probably in my heap."

Flash forward to 2005. He manages to settle on a turbo tranny and hydraulic clutch set up he built that holds the master cylinder underneath the dash. To date, it's the only thing that works well and is consistent. The Colt made 441whp and 414ft lbs with a stock motor/head/cams. Shearer exhuast manifold, 60-1 turbo, Pressure Treated FMIC, and custom pipes are all that this thing was rockin'. A little too much fun one night with a 10 second Grand National on pump gas cost him a piston, but in his words, "Ef it, I won the race."

Now the motor and himself are sponsored by Weisco. The little 2.0 sports Weisco 8.3 to 1 pistons, stock rods and stock crank. With a custom built intake manifold, it's sporting Comp 101200 cams up top and (I believe) a custom 4" turbo-back exhaust.

As of a few days ago, the little four-banger managed to squeeze out 492whp and 425 ft lbs @ 29psi with 92 degree temperatures in the dyno room, not to mention the fact it was out of fuel and turbo. The car went 11.8@134mph untunned at 10.5 to 1 AFR’s. JP says that the car is just plain scary to drive now, and a roll cage and some safetly equipment are definitely next on his list.

"I must say this sight has been a help and inspiration, and I am happy to be part of the community. Stay tunned for some passes @500whp."

You'll definitely need them. Keep us updated on what kinda traction she sees with the multistage.

Those hp/tq numbers are a little low. Add 60 to hp and 50 to tq.
