Well, we just had a very important family vacation and it warranted in my mind that I should get a decent camera.

Bit the bullet and with a little advice from a rather knowledgeable sales guy (did a Photography degree) at Future Shop, bought this model; bundled.

Regular price is $599 for the body alone
One Day Sale was $549 plus a three lense bundle, and a bag that fit all of that and more, for a total of $799.
Lenses separate were well, well, well over the price I paid, regardless of the bag.
So, awesome deal and with a few add-ons like a spare battery and a 32 GB Class 10 SD card, grand total with 13% tax, came to $1009 CDN

Included in the kit:
Lense pictured below - Canon Zoom Lense EF-S 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS II
Canon Zoom Lense EF-S 55-250
Canon Lense EF 50mm f/1.8
Bag - holds 3 lenses and cables/batteries/charger and more
Camera strap

18MP
Small JPG all the way up to L + RAW simultaneous
3.7 FPS burst
HD Video with 1920x1080 30/25/24fps

Spec sheet:

Now, any good photography sites to upload photos to ?
That can also be linked to and posted here ?

Sorry for the huge pictures but some of you have larger, high resolution monitors.

Fooled around with the setting wheel and different modes, but I was generally getting better at reading what the modes actually catered to, when you look at the articulating view finder as you selected different spots on the dial.

All editing you see was with the on-board options for effects: toy camera, grainy B&W, etc.

Some photos taken in lower resolution than others, Ie S versus L and or L + RAW. Crazy how much detail an 18MP RAW photo contains, so can't show those here.

At night, moving ship, through the portal glass/cabin window, no tripod. 55-250 lense, Sport mode.

Congrats on the camera! The Rebel is a great starting-point if you think you'll ever want to get more serious about taking photos. Best advice I can give you is to ditch that 18-55 kit lens ASAP. If you ever need lens advice down the road, or you have any other photo questions, feel free to shoot me a PM.

I will take you up on that when the time comes. I wasn't able to focus when you and snowdevl were talking F stops and such, way back when you guys were first talking about cameras openly here on the site. It did continue to drive me to want something nice, and that I could move up from as funding permitted.
I've been watching some youtube vids by John Greengo and that funny Brit-Asian Kai W on Digital Rev TV. I'm blown away with what the camera has already done when in my hands, but I realize it is like 2% of what could be done when in the right hands/eyes.

Tonus, your night shots are what drove me to get a camera that hopefully could create something similar to what you've posted here over the years. I have a lot of reading to do, and at the very least, get a good tripod. Funds for a radiator and finish the car .... or a tripod; what should win???

I should ask what camera setup and lense types do you run with these days Tony ? Are the lenses a big step up from the entry level stuff ?

I'm glad my night shots inspired you in some way, that's awesome! Getting out and shooting at night is a lot of fun. You don't need a super fancy tripod. For years I rocked a cheapo plastic unit that I bought at Best Buy. One thing I would recommend is a remote shutter release, and they're about $20-30 from any online retailer.

I started out with a little Rebel XT, moved up to a Canon 40D, and now I have a Canon 5D MkII. Currently I have a Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L and a Canon EF 70-210 f/3.5-4.5. The 24-70 is attached to my camera 99% of the time, it's a prefect walkaround lens for a full-frame camera. The quality is way way better than any of the EF-S lenses out there, it's quite noticeable when you're using it, but that doesn't mean that you can't take cool shots with the EF-S lenses, or third-party lenses like Tamron, Sigma, or Tokina. The Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 are both AWESOME lenses for the money. I'd still have them in my bag, but they don't work with a full-frame camera.

So, there is only like one camera level above the one you have now (from memory) ??? Full frame, damn!

Good to know about the tripod, and lenses. Funny question: Do the aftermarket lenses have full capability like the Canon lenses ie autofocus or whatnot ? I've heard reviewers talking about some aftermarket lenses needing to be checked or that would not necessarily support the native functions of a manufacturers lense setups.

Also cool was that I was able to use the camera with contacts lenses on. I actually cannot focus in really close with contacts or glasses, which I just confirmed now with my finger in front of my face. :o I thought it was only contacts, which I have just tried for a couple of weeks before and during the trip, since 199X sometime; also when we last went on a warm trip as a much smaller family (no grand-kids, I was only 15/16!)!

So, I guess with a full frame camera you can get a HUGE picture and crop it to look like a wide landscape. It's all falling into place ..... hahahaha.

It's a couple steps up, I suppose. Once you go full-frame you can never go back! ;)

The third-party stuff works great, considering the price. Canon's USM lenses always focus faster and quieter, and more accurately, but the sharpness, colors and contrast of most third-party lenses is just as good as the Canon stuff...you just have to know what to get and what to stay away from.

The resolution is pretty impressive, but usually I just re-size it appropriately and go from there. It is nice to be able to crop an image a lot and stuff have lots of resolution left to play with though. 8)
