Still getting the little bugs sorted on this thing. The flange for the muffler was in rough shape which is weird because this car has no rust whatsoever underneath. Anyway my brother and I unbolted the muffler and chopped the flange off and made a new one from 1/4" plate. Of course none of the parts stores carried a replacement gasket so we made one from a thin piece of stainless that he had laying around and it worked perfect. She's super quiet now.

I noticed the front rotors are warped so I found some 276mm ones on ebay for $24 shipped each. Figured I'd go ahead and upgrade to the larger brakes if I had to buy rotors anyway. Still searching craigslist and ebay daily for a decent set of tires on the cheap. Trying to keep this a low budget ride and a $400 set of tires would blow that.

Check with the local tire shops, especially the little hole-in-the-wall shops located near downtowns and low-income areas. I usually have luck finding some decent used tires on the cheap there.

Also check junkyards. I've bought tires there too. Hope that helps in the search.

C/L to the rescue again! A local tire store posted up matching tire sets for $120 mounted/balanced. I called and they had a nice set of Goodyear Eagle RSA's. No super fancy tread pattern or anything but they're the correct size, they all match and aren't dryrotted like the old tires so I'm happy. Once the front brakes are on we can actually drive this thing legally and hopefully reliably.

Parts for the front brake replacement are coming in daily. What I thought was a warped rotor ended up being a bad wheel bearing once I tore into it. Not sure how I missed this when I had the axles out. Anyway I am upgrading to larger rotors and twin piston calipers, new wheel bearings and seals, lower ball joints and tie-rod ends. Figured I'd go ahead and bite the bullet and knock this stuff out at once and be done with it. Just waiting on the ball joints now. It's amazing how cheap parts are if you look around. Both 276mm rotors were $48 shipped on ebay, pads were $12, $34 for both wheel bearings, $20 for all 4 seals, $13 for the tie-rod ends and $23 for the ball joints. I had the calipers here so I cleaned them up and painted them and replaced the rubber boots and the little clips that the brake pads snap on to. I'll get some pics once everything is back together.

Here are some before and after shots. It's amazing what a difference a few new parts and some paint makes.

Here is what I started with:

After degreasing and pressure washing:

Some satin black paint:

New rotors, pads and refurbished calipers:

We also took care of the yellow headlights. Started out by wetsanding them with 1000 grit, then 1500, 2000. Then I rubbed on some Mother's aluminum polish and let it sit for a few minutes and then buffed them out.

While browsing the junkyard today looking for a few misc parts to complete my daughter's 94 Montero I stumbled across a 92-94 Eclipse, the exact same color as ours with a perfect rear bumper cover on it. I was amazed because I've honestly never seen one of these things before. I'll try to get it on this weekend and snap some pics, been meaning to fix her power antenna anyway so I'll knock them both out while the hatch plastic is out.The Eclipse has around 142k on it now and it's been a great little car for the money.

No spare time lately to get the bumper installed but here is a pic. Weird to see one of these that isn't all wavy.

We got the new wheels/tires and the junkyard bumper on yesterday. Now it needs to be dropped about an inch or so.
