The headgasket has been bad on my summit ever since I had gotten it a few months ago and decided to finally fix it before it gets too cold. I get the head off tonight and immediately begin searching for the spot in which the hg let go at. I could not find anything so I turned my attention to the head... uh oh. Found a crack about an inch long on cyl #3. Now the car ran bad when I first started it up and used a little coolant but I had never overheated it since I had it. The previous owner must have neglected his regular oil change intervals because the valvetrain was covered in sludge!

I also have the 8v motor I just pulled out of my 89 colt and may just swap that head onto this block. Then again waiting a little longer and swapping a DOHC motor into it seems way more appealing, the car really needs more power. Open to suggestions!!!!!

If you need the car, go ahead and swap the heads. But if the original head has that much sludge in it, there is sludge all in the bottom end as well. You can always run some kerosene through the engine (oil side) when it is running at idle to clear out some of that gunk, but that looks pretty bad!

If you can hold off and you have the funds, I would drop a 4g63 N/A engine into it (unless you want to go turbo). I think you would enjoy the extra power and torque for everyday use.

Run Mobil1 Clean for a thousand miles or so.

Well It looks like to me that the bottom needs to come out too, and theres no way I am spending all this time on the car just to put a POS 1.5 back in! The car is definitely staying auto and my buddy just offered me his complete stock turbo set up off his 91 gsx that has only 67,000 miles on it and the non eprom ecu out of it. Now I was wondering how much harder is it to swap in a turbo set up into the auto cars? i think other than engine related parts I am goin to need a turbo auto harness a flex plate and maybe torque converter? How close are the front and rear mounts to working on the auto cars, or is the same deal as the mt cars?

It seems to me it would be easier to do the swap on an auto; you don't have to deal with the cable/hydro pedal swap, so there's the whole dash removal step avoided.

I have a 92 engine harness from an auto turbo dsm for $50 or toss me some ideas for trades because I don't really need it. The front and rear mounts should be the same. I believe Dan told me he just flipped the frame rail mount for the trans and it all bolted up. I think you might have to clearance a little for the trans though as they are slightly bigger on the end. 904g63summit did a fwd auto swap on his sedan too, maybe shoot him a pm and see what he did.

I'll take that harness! Are you available to make me an adapter harness also? I have a adapter harness I was going to use for my Colt but it is'nt wired for ac and I'm not even sure that the auto and manual adapter harnesses are the same? Now if you can make me a adapter harness, is it possible for me to retain the factory ac?

Here's the thing. Nothing on the dsm engine harness matches the ac components under the hood of a csm, so even if I were to wire in the ac it would still take a lot of work to make the dsm harness work. You'd pretty much have to run wires to everything. I figure anyone that can do that can probably figure out the wiring on their own as well so I never bothered. There is only one plug that is different (dash harness wise) between the auto and manual dsm engine harness. One plug is bigger because it has the wires for the lights in the instrument cluster for R, N, D, 1, 2 etc.

Would you want to trade that harness and a matching adapter harness for those 4g mounts and adapter harness you made awhile back? If not I can throw some cash on top too if you want, I need to get the summit back on the road.

I would but to be honest I don't have any need for those mounts. I really don't sell too much stuff for the 4g's. Shoot me some pics though and I will toss them on mirage forums for you. You can send me your adapter and I can add the plug for the auto harness but like I said you'll have to wire up the lights for the cluster, the gear selectors ones anyway.
