Did I hear you correctly with this being the second time the timing belt has broken in 4 months? Something more then bad luck is going on, IMO. How are you setting the tension and have you replaced the pulleys and auto tensioner?

Hopefully she'll be on the road again soon! Don't give up on her. :D

Wow that sucks dude! That's a great idea to carry spare burgers though; I'm stocking an emergency bag in my car tomorrow. Flares, gas, and burgers! If things get bad enough, add gas-insert flare-heat burgers.

I have a pile of spare 4G63s piled all over my shop in case you decide to upgrade.

First belt broke dec of 10' with 160k on the clock and the engine was tired. Then found a newer engine with just over 100k and it had a 5 speed and newer clutch that came with it so I went that route. Said engine sat for a few months but belt looked mint until today. I put id say 10-12k on it and was flawless. The belt let go at the top of rpm in third getting ready to go for 4th, about 5000k id say. all things went quiet except for the sound of fast clickin' sorta like when you break a cv joint. And before I knew it all the pitter patter sounds of the valves dancing on the pistons heads went away before I could push in the clutch. Nothing seized thanks to the pistons pushing the valves closed for me. How considerate :-?

If I was on a budget, would it be easier to go NA then turbo that engine later? I could drop in a motor pretty fast and do the wiring in a weekend, but all the other fab work of the piping and cost of turbo pushes it way out there for me right now. plus my wife and I are down to one car as of today and need to get something taken care of soon. Most important is a 2nd running car. Maybe finding another head would be the best as I cant see paying 300+ for a decent head job.

Would appreciate the input Dayo.

Well the engines I have laying around aren't turbo, and you would need to source all the mounts, harness, ECU and stuff to make it fit. Honestly that probably wouldn't be the cheapest or quickest route. I wish I hadn't scrapped my running 1.5 that sat on my shop floor for two years.

Man that sucks but honestly you should have done the t-belt regardless of how it looked before you swapped the engine in. They are super cheap and so easy to replace on the 1.5L.

I will admit though, an na 2.0L would be a lot more fun and peppy in that car. Or check out uweenukr's built thread where they stuffed a sohc 2.4 in their car and made no changes to the wiring. Plus you can find 94-99 Galants everywhere in the junkyard with bad auto trannies and good engines. Just a thought.

Turbo and n/a heads are the same, slap a new head on, swap out the cams and the banjo bolt(if the pistons aren't screwed) and call it a week.

That's a new timing belt and head, reuse the gasket if you went with a cometic. Should be able to find a complete head for 150-200 and an $80 timing belt. A saturday worth of work and it's back up and running.

Has anyone on here ever acutally re-used a Cometic MLS head gasket? I wonder about the raised parts around the cylinders, once they are pressed flat will they function the same if re-used?
