Just got this yesterday. Was drawn up from scratch by my cousin, who also did the tattoo'ing. Its still got about 4 hours work to go, the outer outlines are going to be redone to double the thickness, and theres alot of detailing still to do as well as shading. I think its looking good though ![]() Not sure if you guys are into Maori tattoo's, but anywho, its of a 'sea bird' diving down on fish. It tells the story of the arrival of the Tainui waka, which is what my Maori ancestors arrived in NZ on, and their journey inland. They arrived in Auckland to what sounded like people calling out. The sound ended up being the calls of the sea birds, who led them from Auckland, inland to the Waikato river.. It also represents my grandmothers journey from the Waikato back up to Auckland (and thats a story for another day haha). What do ya's think? ![]() ![]() |

How are Maori tattoos received by most people where you live? I think most people here are apprehensive about sleeves and tons of tattoos because, and correct me if I'm wrong or looking into this too deep but, it shows a seriously casual lifestyle, usually an afilliation with entry level drugs, and possibly a hole in someones life (missing parent figures, abuse, or whatever makes the person feel less than whole). Don't get me wrong, I think art that applies to a persons culture can be different, and I like your tatt! I'm sure it took you a while to settle on what them to build the tatt around. You sir, have much more bravery than me, because I could not sit through that without passing out, and on top of that, would never be reserved to the tatt being permanently what I would want. |

I got this one when I was 16. I was real into my family's lineage and I am 1/2 American Indian. My grandfather was the chief of the Seneca Indians that originated from the Pittsburgh/Beaver County region. This tattoo represents the "Power Within". It's actually alot bigger than it looks. My arms are pretty big... ![]() ![]() |

Sorry bout the late reply, was my 21st this past weekend and i've been too busy/drunk/hungover Don't get me wrong, I think art that applies to a persons culture can be different, and I like your tatt! I'm sure it took you a while to settle on what them to build the tatt around. You sir, have much more bravery than me, because I could not sit through that without passing out, and on top of that, would never be reserved to the tatt being permanently what I would want. ![]() It is true that there was once a stigma associated with Maori tattoos, sleeves, and I suppose tattoos in general, but I think these days they are alot more socially acceptable and people generally see them for what they are, which is art, and in the case of most Maori tattoos, symbols of the history associated with a persons ancestry/tribe/iwi/whakapapa. You are right in a way that it did take a while for me to settle on what I wanted done. I've wanted a tatt for a few years now but have never been able to decide for sure what I wanted. This tatt is a 21st 'gift' to me from my family and is something I will carry with me forever, and in that sense I don't think its something i'm ever gonna regret getting done. Geez I hope all that made at least some sense... i'm still quite hungover and bloody tired ![]() Oh btw, about not being able to sit through it without passing out. Harden up ![]() ![]() |
