Anyone got any suggestions on how to keep pricks off the board?

Currently, I have to approve new members, and the only requirement that I have is that they have entered a location correctly. If they enter something to vague, then I just delete them.

Any other suggestions?

How about putting up a warning straight out, if you're a prick you're out?

Maybe give all newbies a 30 day probation period. It'll mean more work for you, but it may solve the problem.

How about making all new users submit a DNA sample? and you can compare it to your known losers DNA list? :)

Here's, the plan, I'm going try to get an autogrouping mod so that new users will automatically be put on probation.

At the moment, I'm thinking that they will only be allowed to post in one forum. Most likely the "general discussion" forum. That way if they BS in there, who cares since it won't be screwing up our technical sections. In addition, they won't be able to post in the technical forums for a while, so they'll have to do a search if they want to find anything. Hopefully cutting down on the "how do I do the 4g63" swap questions that we get from people popping in and then never seeing again.

How about referrals? You know, 'Tell 'em Kyle sent ya.' Of course, you could (and would probably want to) verify with the particular user. There's no reason why the good, honest folks should suffer with the bad.

Yeah, the referral system is interesting.

Maybe a combination of the probation and referral system, in which a current member can refer the new guy out of probation? With the caveat that if the new guy screws up, you both go back to probation status. It works for me, but what do others think?

So if an old-timer made a poor judgement of character, he or she would be sent back to probation (almost typed 'purgatory' by mistake  )?

nah, I don't know if I could do that. That would be a little too strict. There was supposed to be a devil smile in my post, but I forgot to put it.. Here he is.

Which groups should members with under 25 posts be allowed to post in?

I think they should be able to view anything. I wouldn't let them post in anything but the General Discussion and maybe General Tech.
