anyone know if there are any jdm bumpers for sedans? im currently chopping mine up . so far so good. now i need to figure out a way to mount it. the rear bumper weighs around 25-30 lbs and has a foam that can be used as reinforcement and to hold the rear bumper cover on. this guy on galant vr4 did it to his galant and his bumper looks really good (like a jdm). all responses appreciated. and yes i searched. :o if it works out im planning to do the other bumper too.

The cyborg bumper is as close as you're gonna come to a JDM bumper

someone has done this already with a galant vr4. our bumpers have two shades on them if you look at the bumpercover. one is the gray part with a red stripe and the one that is closest to the grill which is the same color of the car itself. now, it has two reinforcements, the regular metal rusted heavy bumper and the foam reinforcements. japanese bumpers are much nicer, hence , people want them. i cut the section out to make it like the jdm ones instead of having a real big bumper sticking out, you have a real bumper but smaller like the jdm's. understand? this guy couldnt find jdm ones so he cut and fit his to make it look more like jdm. and it looks awesome. just a tid bit smaller. so he still has his bumpers and all but he has made his car lighter by: removing the old metal rusted unit that was falling out and replacing it with the foam/plastic type that the bumper comes with or you can get a plastic one which 1. will not rust and 2. is much lighter than the stock one. i already noticed a difference in the handling of the car since i removed the old rusted piece. so you still have the bumper and reinforcement but its much lighter and durable. so , do you understand now?

Regardless of fitment, the only thing that saved my life and the GF's when we were hit in the front section was A) getting hit directly inline with the front bumper, and B) having the metal rebar still attached to absorb a collision of 50kmh(us) - 50kmh(the idiot) at right angles. Something very serious to think about when you are tweaking an already mentioned "tin can" of a vehicle. If we had been hit in the door, it would have been game over for me. Something very serious to think about. Look is one thing but if you don't at least engineer it to the standard the factory did for our cars and their frame design, then you are taking big chances on behalf of yourself and all your passengers. :-?

you are correct , but this is the way they are sold in japan and are functional, lighter and absorb as much as the regular bumpers do. take a look at what is supporting the bumper itself. upon inspection its only a thin sheet of metal. that is what holds the bumper on the car. this piece of metal is actually weaker than the bumper itself. i thought about this myself. im mr. play it safe so that you know. and if your hit on a frontal, rear collision, or any other collision whatsoever, a heavy bumper isnt going to do much for you unless the under structure is stronger than the bumper itself. i was looking at the rear of the car yesterday and i noticed this, the heavyyyyyy bumper is held by four screws onto this layered sheet of metal that 1. i can look behind it and 2. i can bend it with a set of plyers very easily. so, think what would happen in a case where youre hit in the rear, the bumper will either be ripped off and the rear end that holds the bumper in place will be crushed like a soda can. or the bumper will stay on (without damage) and the rear will be bent out of shape. the foam under neath it is just as strong and lighter too. so for someone who actually plays it safe (exagerratedly so) it freaked me out to see what was actually holding such a heavy duty bumper. plus, my bumper was falling out and rusted. what to do in this case? well ill just modify it instead of going and looking for one that i probably wont find anyways. another thing.. what holds the jdm bumpers in place? where can you get a cyborg bumper and what holds that in place?

Ever heard of crumple zones? The "squishing like a tin can" is what likely saves your ass.

OMG. please read what ive described above. the heavyyyy metal bumper is supported by thin pieces of sheet metal that i can bend with my bare hands. in an accident the bumper will not bend, the tin can part of your car will. get it? i already had this problem before with another car i had. the car hit the back side of my car and the bumper ripped off and the sheet metal bent up . the bumper was still good but what the part of the car that holds the bumper bent like crazy. understand now. whats the purpose of carrying around so much metal for then? the plastic support is enough.

the bumper is there to protect in low speed (aka 15mph and lower) crashes. but it also has the added purpose in high speed crashes to keep the car somewhat together in the event of a crash. think of it as a really strong ziptie trying to hold a hollow point bullet together. the bullet is gonna fragment a LOT more without something trying to keep it together. though it doesn't help much, it could still save your life. just fyi... in the end it's up to you to determine what you want to do, but if you do replace it, good luck passing inspection unless you have a hookup somewhere.

the car will still have the bumper on. what im trying to do is shave it a little bit. the old rust metal bumper is not good so ill be replacing it with the foam type bumper (which looks like has some plastic skeleton in it) anyways right now im trimming and looking for bracketry to put it up. when i do ill see if i can get some pics up.
