Installed a home-made breather filter yesterday inline w/ the PCV. It consists simply of a fuel filter for older/carbed cars, rigged up w/ some old fuel hose.
The results were remarkable. My idle is very stable now and the engine runs much smoother at idle speed. You can even see why when looking at the filter. It's full w/ oily crap after 190 km (about 120 miles) of high-speed driving at 4000+ revs. However, I can't tell how long this filter will last, as it is already rather clogged. Nonetheless, at 2-3 bucks a filter + some old hoses it's a bargain.

I've got one rigged into the breather from rocker (by cam angle sensor) to intake pipe to catch some blowby. It also works well, but yes mine is rather full too. Mite be better to get oil catch can instead?.

Seems like those filters are merely a cheap diagnostic tool to find out if one's in need of a catch can. :D However, I never heard of THAT much blowby on the rocker cover breather. I had the filter there before I put it on the PVC line and there was never any oil in it. Maybe exessive blowby or clogged PCV?

After 540+ km (335 miles) of driving, oil start to collect on the bottom of the breather filter. I think that's the maximum life span of such a thing, varying from car to car due to different wear (i.e. more or less blow-by). However, I already bought a new filter. It seems like my car starts and idles much better now with that filter. Except for their limited life time, thumbs up!

What about trying to drill a drain valve into one of those filters?

A drain valve sounds promising. When I change the old filter, I'll try to clean it and construct some sort of catch can around it. I'll then post what results I get.

Heres an idea, How about using a AC Seperator? (Can't remember the real name but its the can with two lines and a pressure switch) Basically its a can with a tube going down to the bottom and a outlet to seperate vapor from liquid refrigerant. My thought is to drill and tap a drain in the bottom. It'll let vapors out but catch the liquid. Junkyards throw these out all the time.

Aren't those things used in fridges? If so, one could have a nice breather filter for some 5 bux or so.

That old breather filter is in there for some 1000+ miles now and still has some oil collecting inside. Even though this filter is dirty, my idle is still rather good, compared to a non-installed filter. I may try to wash it out with gasoline.
As to now, I can only give this a "both thumbs up" rating - highly recommended, good availability, nice results and very low costs.

After changing the filter for the only-god-knows time, I decided to clean the old filter w/ gasoline. Well I can't really recommend it. It won't get all oily sludge out, just a small percentage. However, it is quite a bit of dirt taken away, and this filter looks like it is usable an second time. If you're a cheap ass not minding all that crap on your work bench, I'd do the clean up. If not, just buy a new filter.

Can you just put a breather cap on the valve cover?

Sure you can. But AFAIK those are expensive.

so the purpose of the pcv valve is to let air out but not in right? and you guys are talking about putting a fuel filter ritght before it to make it work better. my question is there 2 vac lines comming off of the valve cover, but they both combine on top of the intake. an open element filter wouldnt mess up any vaccum applications would it?
