Just got my shifter in that I bought from customthecoltGT, and man is it nice. :D

When I got it, it was packaged well, and looked good. the welds were solid, and the finish was nice (yeah, no one will ever see it, but still, who likes to recieve rusty parts...).

Pic of stock vs shortened.

I did have to remove some weld material from the underside of the shifter in order for it to fit correctly... luckily I had some porting tools sitting around. :D I had to grind down this welding almost flush like the stock shifter. A little material wont hurt, but most of it had to go.

Now, when I got this shifter I was kinda dismayed that the shifter was going to sit very low in the saddle for me to use. I dont like making alot of arm movement from steering wheel to shifter, so I started thinking. What if I lifted the shifter plate from the body? So I dug up some longer bolts and went to the hardware store and purchased $3.50 worth of washers and viola:

This ended up lifting the back of the shifter bracket a little over an inch - any higher and I dont think it would work. I left the front bolts at the stock height, so this tilted the whole bracket towards the front some. this was perfect because I also tightened the shifter cables and that was causing the shifter to lean alot to the rear. 2nd and 4th gear had the shifter so far back it was difficult to shift.

so now the shifter was only about an inch or less shorter than the stock shifter. perfect.

Shifter in center (neutral) position.

Shifter in 1st:

Shifter in 2nd:

So for the total money:

$55.00 - shifter
$3.50 - washers

= $58.50

I am quite happy with the shifter.

So basically the shift lever has been shortened but the throw is the same?

Exactly. Stock throw, with a shortened lever, to reduce the throw travel.

It screwed up my car though.
During the first test drive (after the above post), I shifted so quickly into second that my clutch just spun and would not grab. The clutch was about to be replaced anyway, but I was hoping it wouldn't go like that. usually when I shift, it takes so long that the turbo isn't in full spool anymore, so there is a second for the clutch to grab before power hits it. this time it shifted so quick, the clutch didn't have a chance.

He thought it's to uncomfortable to reach that low for each shift. And I agree w/ him, I will do the same when installing a short shifter. Hopefully my tranny will handle it. It's grinding a bit in 1st gear. :(

I did the same, it's a little low, so I have to sit further forward. I was going to do a similar thing, raise it all up with longer bolts, I'd like it about 2 inches higher though.

Problem is I'd have to take out the bottom storage hole in the centre console so the cables can run through. (C10 interior) I still think I might do it, don't want it to look too ugly though.

I shorted mine the same way, though it didn't cost me ;) I grinded the old weld, cut it down and got a friend to reweld it.

I had a similar problem when i cut my shifter. Mine is even shorter. I made a new one that bends backward right at where it mounts then up and forward at a little below the bulge. That set it back about an inch and angled it comfortable.

has anyone tried using a 91+ 1G DSM shifter. they got pretty short throws and you can get a REAL short shifter for those

nope. I was thinking about it, but it was too much to swap out on theory.

I think you would have to swap out the shifter mount plate, shifter cables (I think), and the shift levers on the transmission - or you can swap a 2.0 tranny in.

I would rather do the tranny swap to a modded 2.0 AWD and install the DSM shifter stuff than installing all that crap just for a short shifter.

Heres the real deal. You extend the linkage further away from the pivot point. The linkage will travel further with less travel on the opposite end of the pivot point, that being the shift knob. You would cut the linkage and extend it out. Not to far though because you dont want the tranny popping out of gear to easily. If you have the time to make a few test runs you can figure out the exact amount to lenghthen the linkage. You will have a little metal to cut away so the linkage will travel smoothly, but this will ultimately work over the chop chop idea. Not any serious metal, just the mounting plate. I've already tried it. It works. I just havent finished it yet. Ask Darkhorse for a second opinion. He's seen it in action.

I made one here for my Mirage, was not too difficult. I guess as long as you have the tools and kind of an idea of what the finished product should look like, it can happen.

So far it workd great, and shifting is so much easier.
