1990 cyborg, td04 13g, evo3 front mount ic, standard fuel, injectors ecu. boost at 14psi

okay car was driving perfectly, didnt drive it over the weekend, started it up yesterday to move it out of the way of another car and it sounded a bit sick... didnt think anything of it.

today started it up to drive into uni and it sounded sick but not too bad, drove it in, once it was warmed up, it was fine. parked it up at a mates apartment and when i got out, i let it cool for a bit (no turbo timer) and noticed it wasnt running very smoothly.

driving home, under boost it sounded really terrible, like a death rattle, not like the nice whooshing noise it used to make, induction sound, but a sick rattly sound. boost control was fine... just below one bar (14psi). temp was fine, sitting below the halfway mark.

so i got home and parked it up, let it cool down while i take a look under the bonnet, and the car stalls. so i start it up again and it stalls immediately. did it several times. so im getting a bit worried now. leave it for a few mins then start it up again.

idles fine for a bit, but not steadily. jumps up and down like its trying to find a stable idle then dies after a minute. then wont idle unless you leave it.

blows some white smoke ? but could just be because its pretty cold outside.

i have no clue what the problem is ? drove fine last week...

i did a search and found that the rattling could be detonation, especially under boost ? i thought the nice cool air and my evo3 intercooler shud be orite, especially only running 14pounds.

any help guys ?????
cheers
ken

The rattling could be detonation/pinging. Get this checked quick!

yeah i think it is... everything was fine before, made no new mods, i dont see why it would start detonating today when it was fine a few days ago. ????

any other ideas what it could be ?

you could get a palm pilot and whip up a datalogger cable...
cable thread: http://www.4g61t.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... 4&start=15
it'll give you all kinds of nifty engine info...including knock readings.

did you check the simple things like a loose air mass cable, or the spark plugs?

Its all the small things that add up to one big thing... :)

My car did the exact same thing and turned out to be the #3 spark plug wire was arching to the block. Let it idle then pull up each wire one at a time and listen for a change. If you pull a wire and the idle doesn't drop, then you have a dead cylinder and could be a faulty wire, plug or injector.(Remeber to plug wire back before pulling the next one... ). Thats a quick and easy way to diag for a dead cylinder.

Also check yuor ISC - idle speed controller aka Stepper motor, ICU.

I would suggest taking your throttle body off and giving it a good clean.
