I have a 1991 Plymouth Colt GL with 80k miles. It runs great, is super reliable, but is slow as shit and has awful breaks and suspension. I want to turn this thing into a daily driver and weekend autocross machine using junkyard parts.

Thinking about an engine swap, but its an automatic. Can anyone point me in the right direction in terms of online FAQs or anywhere I can go to learn how to turn this thing into something slightly respectable? I only know the basics about cars. I know that my engine is a 12valve, which is reasonably shitty as far as I know. Could I somehow find a 16 valve Turbo and a manual transmission to stick in there? What other Mitsbu cars have a compatible drivetrain?

Also, what car could I swap brakes and suspension with? The ones on my car suck so much.

I cannot get rid of the heater btw, because it gets cold as fruit and banana around here in the winter. Is the A/C a seperate unit which I could get rid of to save engine bay space/ weight? If Heat and AC are the same thing then I guess I can't get rid of it.

Or should I just give up doing it myself and save up for a WRX?

Its all been done before as for bares and suspension I totally agree with you on how bad they really suck buy a set of Konis and put on a set of GC coilovers go into suspension archive I rave all about this fantastic setup as for brakes you can use front calipers from an 89/90 Galant and use 89 turbo mirage brake pads (something like KVR) and Use X drilled KVR Discs add a Sonata Brake booster and Master cylinder with DOT 4 Brake Fluid you'll be stopping well...

Another option is using the front and rear brake setup from a 92-95 Elantra.
