Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone can tell me where the transmission oil on my 88 Colt DL is filled from (standard trans). And what kind of oil to use

manual trans are fill in the front just under and slightly to the p/s of the shift linkage.. should take a 17 mm wrench

Also, if I plan to fill it myself, I will need something pressurized to get my oil in there?

I personally use a thin walled rubber hose that fits inside the trans.. and fill it from the top while standing... make sure the hose is a loose fit tho cause as soon as it start leaking out then its full... if hose is super tight then it wont leak and u will over fill it.

If you fill the trans while on jack stands, be sure to keep a small shallow pan under the casing, so when you drop the car down, with the fill plug still removed, the car will level out and the fluid won't be over filled. Then you can clean the contact surface, install new aluminum or copper crush washer gaskets (both bolts, or they will leak), and tighten them to spec. I admit torquing the 24mm shallow head bolt on the drain side, would be no easy task. Most use a large wrench, box end.
GL4 fluid only, not GL5, so a fluid rated to meet GL4 specs

You could use it, but aim for a fluid that says specifically GL-4. The reasons are for the syncros to survive, the GL-4 oil must be used over the long term. GL-5 contains components that eat the materials in the syncronizer assemblies on these early transmissions. GL-5 also is a little too slick for the syncros to work to slow the gears before meshing and allowing torque transfer. Those are the two reasons that the GL-5 is not supposed to be used in these transmissions. There were many transmissions that were like this, even until recent era cars, but most can or do use a GL-5 within the Kia/Hyundai/Mitsubishi families. Some cars used motor oil shared with the engine, some used oil like motor oil but just in the trans (Honda) and they still do use similar super thin/light viscosity type oils that seem like Auto Trans fluid more than diff oils in their consistency.
