my housing looks great but the gears were rusted from sitting.
So looking for replacements i pulled this gear from another block that was trashed.
it has light scoring/scuffing marks on it but i have no idea what the threshold for reusing this would be
it still feels smooth overall but i can pick up a couple grooves with a fingernail (barely)

would a used gear ever look impeccable without signs of circular use/wear?
the mantra seems to be "if in doubt buy a new one" but i dont want to throw money into the wind either if they always look like this
thanks

a little hand polish and i would rock them. used gears can look better. but I see nothing that would prevent me from reusing them. if you can spin in drill even better. always polish with direction in mind. gear needs to turn same direction it would in engine. sand paper is stationary. dont try to remove marks. a very light polish to remove high spots is what you are after. 600 wet paper works well for this.

Ok I will try doing exactly that then reassemble and measure/ see how it feels.

Thanks I appreciate knowing that you've messed with these engines for years and have seen lots of conditons. gives me confidence.
I get so tired of wading through tons of random information/ opinions on the internet never backed up by anything.

I guess this way I get to learn for myself too

I have reused oil pumps with 200k on them for built motors.
