Hey guys just started working on my new summit today. It dies after it's been running 15+ minutes or so. I played with the throttle as it was dying and it kicked back to life.

So far today I have checked the ECU and distributor

The ECU has been removed previously, the electric tape on the harness was all worn from pulling the ECM in/out

There is writing in the ECM, is this normal?

This looks damaged to me, any thoughts?

The distributor looks brand new, I feel like the coil is kind of cock-eyed in relation to the rest of the distributor housing and guts. Is this normal?
I hope I put the washer back right that I am pointing to, if anyone wants to chime in let me know!

That surface mount resistor (or whatever we call it) does look to have been flipped up. I have one that is missing on my Eprom and currently the motor still runs appropriately, or no different from any other I have used/seen.

You appear to have two if not three origial capacitors, the dark blue/black with grey fat striping. Those must be removed, surface cleaned with alcohol and then new capacitors are installed. It's literally $5 worth of parts.

My first ECU in the Colt turbo, would run fine until it got hot then it would click behind the dash and the engine would shut off, kick back in seconds later, and rinse repeat. Funny to see a car start back up only because the inertia from the flywheel had things still spinning fast enought to catch with spark and fuel again. First 4g15 Colt was idling funny and then flat out died. Traced all wiring and even bought a boat load of parts, turned out the ECU died a painful death due to old caps. Installed new ones but it was too far gone. Had to source a reman from Texas at the time. Later, guys here found me spares at a cheaper price.

See if the surface mount resistor can be flexed back down gently and soldered into place. Also, maybe stick it out in the heat of the sun to warm the metal joint up a bit. Otherwise perform the board work in a cool shady, statically neutral spot. No wooly socks on carpet while rubbing your belly, in a dry air environment, with no ground strap to the table or a PC chassis.

Looks like you have an Eprom ECU.

I will search for new capacitors online today, thank you!

It would be really cool if it were a simple fix like that, the car seems to be in really good shape for 200k otherwise.

pull the ECU board off the case and look at the back of it.

[edit] Have you any codes? have you tried to log?

sure you know this already, but in case you dont, those vans have the same trans as a 2g dsm. they have a slightly thinner vc, besides that, same thing. these vans are actually surprisingly quick with the stock 2.4! i loved mine with the 2.4, drove it like that for a few months, it was awesome. so i dont bkame you if you dont plan on swapping it.
i would just swap it now, and not have to worry about whats wrong with it
