Hello everyone,

I stumbled across this site looking for info on my newly acquired purchase. I bought a 1992 3 door Colt Vista awd auto today. I come from the domestic world but financial issues have left me looking for cheap transportation. It's rusty, it's odd looking but it was cheap and awd for winter!

Now for my problem...when driving it I get what feels like sporadic misfires, heavy vibrations and surges in power. I will be performing a full tune up this weekend. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor and pcv valve along with an oil change and radiator flush. After some lurking I'm wondering if my ecu or tcm could be my issue or part of it. Can anyone verify or even comprehend my diagnosis? I'm praying it's not transmission!!

Well thanks for reading and in advance for any assistance!

Lots of views but no replies...

Well I'm curious to know a few things about the trans just incase that's the culprit.

A. Can I use a RVR trans on my 1992 4g64 awd auto? If so any parts need swapping like starter or modifications to bell housing?

B. If it's just the TCM rotting can I wire it Kiggly style using my stock shifter. Possibley using the oberdrive button for 4th gear switch? Also without any other mods than just the wiring?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated from this nub!!

Yes the rvr tranny will work. Search for "riceless90" posts on this forum. We installed an rvr tranny and used a 3g Eclipse gt slap.shifter and forcedfour box to give him a slapshifter

Thanks Thom, that's on a turbo car. I'm hoping it's the same for my non turbo 2.4l. First I will try the Kiggly wiring to bypass the TCU and slap shift. Hoping the increase in pressure will assist in keeping the clutches locked. As soon as it's a bit warmer day I'm going to give it a shot. Just need to figure out where the blue 12v wire on the bottom of the diagram connects to. Oh and pick up some 2 ohm diodes...

Tune up solved all my problems! PCV valve was stuck shut so that I'm sure wasn't helping. Shifts smooth and has decent power now with no surging, hesitations or misfires. Happy guy here!

So what are some good mods for extra power? I hear these motor takes well to intake and exhausts. Anything else I should be looking into?

you have to upload them to someplace like photobucket or any of the online hosting sites... then link them to here..

Factory thank you! That really was easy and fast. I feel so old not knowing all this stuff. Being my 35th birthday to compounds that. Hahaha

Turbo does not really matter. The transmision is just a w4a33. Same casing as the w4a32 (which is in your wagon), so they bolt up. But, you will never be able to hurt the RVR tranny. Robert's launched @ 20psi all day long on it's way to 12's in the quarter mile. All this on the stock 3-bolt rearend and all stock axles.

The slapshift works the same, and can help if you are really reving it out as you will get snap shifts at high RPM, no flaring and the heat that accompanies it.

That's what I needed to know, thanks again Thom!

You guys really know these cars. I'm so excited to have found one, this site and met some knowledgeable and friendly folks. I almost bought a Honda Civic but chose the Colt purely on price and the additional sliding door. I'm glad I did because it's such a cool car! I put Street Rod tags on it and have gotten quite a few comments on the car. I'm fully pleased and proud to own such an odd vehicle!

So technically it's a CSM and not a DSM?

I had a chance to buy that car from Walt! I passed because I hadnt been searching for very long and wanted to see if there were cleaner cars to be had. its the cheapest one I have seen in my three week search. I offered him 1200 for it. what did you pick it up for?
