What cv axle would you buy for a f5m33 trans with stock knuckles and brakes and 4g63 6bolt. This is only for the driver side. I know the 1989 colt gt turbo passenger axle works, according to my quick driver on it around a bunch of turns.
The driver side cv axle keeps poping out at the trans. It did this a couple of times while driving and sound horrible and jerked me around. I talk once again to THOMCASEY (very helpful and really appreciate his help). He said I could run a awd driver side cv axle with the midshaft (Intermediate shaft) that has a bearing that attaches to the block. I plan on doing this. If anyone has some comments to throw in I am more than willing to listen. Also, I don't know what is currently on the car. It looks new and assumed it was a turbo colt but from talks it sounds like a regular colt gt N/A.

If you use a dsm intermediate shaft and D/S axle you may have to modify the axle seal. I had to buy a new FWD seal and an AWD one and I used black permatex gasket maker to join one on top of the other. Sounds ghetto I know but it worked perfectly and didn't leak. The AWD seal is too small for the FWD trans. Hope this helps...

Colt axel shafts have a shorter splint section on them and the C clip might not be getting far in far enough to lock the axel in place. If you go with the intermediate AWD shaft you'll need a turbo CSM outer half shaft
My Question in response: So what did you do about the seal then J2dapo? Is the dsm awd intermediate shaft bigger or smaller in diameter than the fwd? I had thought I used a dsm awd intermediate with a awd cv in my fwd talon before. I might be wrong. I looked up in the advance auto parts log which is wrong a lot. The driver side trans seal for a awd and fwd is the same. A bit confuseā€¦. Which is why I am making this post.

Front the pictures ShawnJ posted, I think I might be able to use a 1989 dodge colt turbo driver side cv axle with a dsm awd intermediate shaft. I say this due to the understanding that the 1989 dodge colt turbo intermediate shaft and cv axle will work for my setup. Too bad I don't have the intermediate shaft for the turbo colt. I do have the awd version. ?????? These are more of a question than statement.

OK for my problem here is what is available out there currently
So I cant buy a 89 colt turbo midshaft (shaft that comes out of driver side trans and bolts to the block via bearing)
I can buy the 89 colt turbo cv axles without the Midshaft mentioned above
I have a 91-94 dsm awd Midshaft. I have a 91-94 dsm awd driver side cv axle.
I have a 89 colt gt NON TURBO driver side cv axle (long cv axle like a fwd dsm but different length than a fwd dsm)
I have a 90 Turbo DsM Fwd driver side cv axle.
I can also buy a drive side non turbo 89 colt gt cv axle also LOOONG CV AXLE.
I just need to know what works best thank guys

Pretty sure you need stock C53A axles, no matter what trans you're using. When I switched from the KM210 to the F5M33 on my Mirage, I didn't need to do anything with the axles. Of course, this was a few years ago, so my memory could be a bit fuzzy.

I also ordered from mitsu...DSM fwd and AWD driver side seals and also a differential seal that apparently works to seal the awd intermediate shaft to the fwd trans. MD707184

So the dsmtalk link ^ says that the MD707184 seal worked in his fwd trans to seal an AWD DSM intermediate shaft. If you look cross reference the MD707184 seal it comes up as a 89-90 Dodge colt GT transmission output seal. I wonder if he had a 4g61T intermediate shaft and was installing it on a fwd dsm with an AWD outer cv axle??????

For everyone out there looking for the part number

I've never seen that before with the Hyundai seal, it's worth a try for sure. I just rtv'd an awd seal to a fwd one and it worked for me with the DSM AWD intermediate shaft. On stuff like this, there really isn't a right or wrong way to go about it. Most just do what is available to them.

I got my axles from carquest back in the day when I did my swap. I was lucky and got the correct ones. I've also heard horror stories of others getting regular na csm axles which will not work correctly. Pretty sure J2dapo was talking about the na csm axles. The part that slides into the diff on the transmission is slightly different between turbo and na. The na ones are slightly shorter and won't "snap" into the dsm trans so there's nothing to hold them in. The turbo csm and dsm axles snap in like they should.

My car had the wrong driver's side axle when I first bought it. Didn't realize it for months. One day it popped out and pissed tranny fluid everywhere...popped it back in and it didn't give me any issues again for a while. Then one day I went to replace the axles, got a legit Mirage Turbo driver's side axle, and thought it was wrong because it was slightly longer. That caused quite a headache!

How do I know what is right?? I mean do I just keep having to fill the trans with $15 a qrt trans fluid until I find the right combo. I mean this sound like a headache to the bahhhhhhhhhhhhhhha degree. I am just frustrated. Nothing like something so stupid as cv axles holding me up more than anything. My buddy is running around town today and collecting my cv axles that I have around town in all my storage locations.
I also called Mitsu to see if they can order a 1989 Mirage 1.6L turbo intermediate shaft. She found the part numbers for it, but I am waiting with anticipations right now. I have 15min until I have to have it all ordered to be able to get my parts Friday. !!!!!!!


This is like a honda but way worse. Yes, I have done this with hondas also. Stupid JDM have different cv axles than what we did when you do b series swaps in old cars.
It will be worst when I have to have my 83 (getting ls vtec) built and have to have special made cv axles for the length and to hold the power.... Questioning going boosted.

OK so I do what I do, meaning dang it I made people do there job and find parts for me in the system.
I must give a round of applause to Michelle in Parts at Andy Mohr Mitsubishi in Fisher, IN. She was extremely helpful and did some really good leg work for us on the forums.
Here is what I found for the 1989 Mirage 1.6 turbo
Intermediate shaft number is 32068AL Mits #MB526873 not available
Intermediate shaft number is 32068AL when cross referencing for myself found out a Lancer Wagon had this as MB526872 cause the able 73 came up as the outer cv axle hub for the castle nut to go on. Interesting enough the MB526872 came up with nothing in the USA system. So it most have been a overseas number only.
Intermediate Shaft Bearing not including bracket is 32005L Mits# MB526956 Available for $68.10

DSM INFO
GST Driver side Trans output shaft seal 32268 Mits#MD742053 Available $9.14
GSX Driver side Trans output shaft seal 22616 Mits# MD719710 $9.88

I have ordered what I can to find out what will and will not work.
I also ordered the MD707184

the md707184 will seal your awd intermediate shaft into a fwd f5m33 trans like a dream.
fyi mirage man this should be your new fix and is way cheaper. I spent 30$ in seals to find this out.

Can you post up some pics of that seal and we'll sticky this? Any idea what that seal comes from? This is why I said earlier that everybody does these swaps slightly different and they use what is available to them. Had I known about this seal I would have used it on my swap. Thanks for the info!

OK so I have a big failure weekend. I am super butt hurt about the entire event. I just got ticked off and went longboarding both Saturday and Sunday. Found out my turbo was blown (Sat). Sunday, I went to insert the seal with the trans in the car. I used a 32mm socket to pop it in. I thought it was going in smooth aka crooked and bent. I am ordering another this week. I am also going to find a non dealership part number for the MD707184. From my quick measurements with a caliper. MD707184 has the ID of a AWD Intermediate shaft and I did slip it on the intermediate shaft. It had a nice seal. The MD707184 had roughly the same OD as the FWD seal. I didn't care to measure it to much and it was within .1 of a mm so I went to install it like a child rushing through hw to play video games.
I will get better results this next weekend as it will be on the road.

I just took an awd seal and rtv'd it into the tranny, it has held up fine so far. I had everything out of the car when i put mine in and installed it on the shaft first and then installed to whole assembly and let dry for 2 days before putting any fluid in or turning it over. The awd seal has an extra dust boot on it to keep the seal clean, compared to the fwd seal that presses against the cv axle to create the same type of seal. Just so you know. I also ordered a brand new colt gt drivers side cv axle off of rock auto a couple of months ago and it fits great! Dont remember how many they had left though.

My point was with the MD707184 you don't have to do all that
None are left for a 89 dodge colt gt turbo but it has been brought to my attention you may be able to find it under a 88 turbo colt
