Hi,

I know, there is many thread about tire size on this forum, but most of it is for 15 inch wheel. I would like to know feedback from your experience on 16 inch wheels (street and track).

As I read, 195/50 R15 seam to be the standard (3rd gen.) , so base on that size, I calculate that 205/40 R16 should be good tire size (less than 1% difference).

My setup :
  • 4G63T
  • 1G FWD DSM transmission (F5M33)
  • CSM turbo Cluster (9K RPM)
  • Coil-over setup (no problems with wheel hitting shox seat)
  • Wheels 16 inch (I suppose they are 7 inch large...)
My Questions :
  • With tire size 205/40 R16, does my cluster will work properly ? (speedo)
  • The F5M33 as a final ratio 3.437 vs. 4.32 for CSM km201 , is that will affect my speedo ?
I made a few search, but did not find what I was looking for. So if you know thread on this subject, please post it here !

Thanks for your answer / experience !

Your speedo will be fine. Just compare the tire size you want to run against the original 13" tires it came with. With your final-drive change, you will see less "rev's" at highway speed over the stock tranny, it helps with gas mileage. But, if you are still running the 1.5L motor, then you may find yourself downshifting to pass as you will not have the torque needed in the lower RPM range.

Sorry forgot to mention ; I ran a 4G63T. I have edited my first post (setup).

Do I calculate with goods tire size ? I'm not sure of 185/60 R14 for OEM size with 14 inch ?

155/80 R13 ==> (0.1%) ==> 185/60 R14 ==> (0.2%) ==> 195/50 R15 ==> (1.0%) ==> 205/40 R16

So overall, I calculate that I will have 1.3% off , with 16 inch wheels ? Possible ??

I would say since dsm's came stock with 16s (at least my talon did and the stock rims I have are 16s) i got 16' rims for my first colt (all stock) and the speedo was off.. I purchased tires that were as close as I could get to the equivalent of the stock 13s that came on my car.... I put them on my white swapped car and speedo was off even more... I got a junk parts car with stock dsm rims and tires and the speedo was almost right on.

so if useing a dsm trans.. find out what size the stock rims and tire size is to match that trans..

hope this helps.

also if u cant figure out what size to run try. this site just input the numbers and it sbows the tire/rim

http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp

or here is a calculator to check the tire differences

What transmission you have shouldn't really make a difference; you need to match your tire diameter to the cluster you have. The GT cluster matches up to the 14" tires that GT's and 1.6L LS sedans use. A transmission swap shouldn't affect that. If you run DSM diameter tires, with your CSM cluster, your speedo will read slow.

my 1.5 auto GT came with stock 13s.... and the gear is in the trans not the cluster.. so if u take the car to a shop that specializes in fixing/matching ur speedo/mph to match.... they change the gear in the trans where the cable goes in..

The transmission makes all the difference because they're geared different. I run 195/65 r15 tire, tall tire to help lower rpm at cruise. With the stock KM210 trans my odometer correction was .9438:1, meaning if the odometer read 300mi I actually drove 317.86mi. With the same tires, when I put the DSM trans (F5M33), the taller final drive of the trans changed the odometer ratio to 1.1:1, meaning that same 300mi on the odometer meant I actually drove 272.72mi. And likes, on the stock trans the speedo read slower than my actual speed and with the DSM trans the speedo now reads faster than actual speed.

When I swapped my 4 speed for a KM210, my cluster, the 14 inch wheels that came with the five speed and swapped in every other part that came with my 1.6L donor car, my speedometer stayed pretty much dead on. (as it should because I used all the pertinent stuff that came together on the 1.6 donor car.) Then I put the AWD W5M33 transmission, and my speedometer remained unaffected. I did probably save the speedometer driven gear from the KM210 though. Perhaps that's why I didn't run into speedometer issues. I just kinda thought the !.6 cluster was set up for the 14" tire size that came on turbo GTs and LS 1.6L sedans. That's why i run 205/45 R16 tires now; they were the closest diameter I could find in a 16 to the 195/60 R14.

Well, I'm glad to see that my "newbie question" does not seem so obvious ... ;)

Do some one ran a F5M33 + turbo cluster (9K RPM) ? What is the tire size ? What are the speeds of the cluster vs a GPS ?

ColtFan @ 205/45 R16 can be a great solution. Do you have any picture of your car ? I'm curious to see what this tire size look like.

Thanks for the clarification !

195/60 R14 ==> 0.2% ==> 205/45 R16

This information is a sense with what ColtsFan wrote.

I give a try with 205/45 R16. Plus, with the road "quality" over here, 45% is better than 40% ... ;)

Thanks everyone !
