Well getting ahold of a complete motor thats already turbo, would help you easier. Plus it couldnt hurt to grab a turbo harness and ECU and axels...Im not sure how long the non-turbo block will hold up even though I hear it is the same in alot of aspects. If I were you, I would track down something in the 4g63t area just so you can have that extra power.

Look for a running 4g61t on here they sell for pretty cheap, if not i'm not sure how strong the non turbo 1.6 were.

The only differences between the bottom ends of the 4g61 and 4g61t are as follows: 4g61t has oil squirters and 8(ish):1 compression ratio, 4g61 has no oil squirters and 9.2:1 CR.

The good news is all 4g61 blocks have the bosses for the oil squirters. This means your NA 4g61 can easily have a set of squirters from any 4g6x installed into it.

I have a thread where a made my NA 1.6l Summit LX turbo doing just this and using the OE harness. I only had to run one wire for the 7 wire turbo MAF and the wire bundle tor the knock sensor. Everything else remained unchanged. That thread is under the "Builds" subsection, I recommend reading through it, and it does have good pics.

You don't even really need oil squirters. It just depends on how crazy you want to get with the car.

What are your power goals?

Pistons different? Turbo pistons show 61T on the dish area IIRC. Been a while but pretty sure that was also true for the 4g63 too, turbo and non-turbo.

Either way, good tuning will make the difference between low boost only and possibly pushing more exciting options, to which a turbo motor would already start at.

Yes the dish volume is different. That is what changes the CR. But they are still both cast aluminum. No difference in regards to "strength".

If they are the same as the N/A 4g63 vs 4g63t, then the ring lands will be closer to the top of the piston, this will make them more likely to be damaged/broken under high boost/knock. But, handling under PSI I bet they would do just fine. But, keep the octane high. I ran a N/A 4g63 motor in my old TSI AWD for 1.5 years and 21k miles without issue. Sold the car and kept the motor. Pulled the head, pistons were perfect. Currently riceless90 is running a N/A 4g63 in his colt @ 19psi on e85. runs great.

I honestly don't think that makes them "weaker". If you are pushing an engine hard enough to break the ring lands on an OE piston then it isn't going to matter whether or not the rings are 2mm higher or lower on the piston, they are going to break.Mechanically, 4g61 bottom ends are stronger than the other 4g6x kin due to the short rods and stroke.
