Hi guys, hey my car failed smog again. I baught a new cat, drove one mile had it checked again and didnt pass again. Guy said it might need to be warmed up on our cars,is this correct? Because i dont want to pay $50 bucks to fail again. All the numbers were high by the way. Also i changed wires and plugs allready. And not sure what else can i do? Ps is 200 miles on hard driving normal per tank?thanks so much, Cause its 3 months past on sticker and u only get 6 MONTHS in cali and they steal ur car away. Charleyturbo.

Does it smoke? Did you change the oil right before?

The hotter the cat the better for the test. EGR working properly?

You need to drive the car for at least 20-30 minutes before you take it in to get tested. You should also beat on it, if possible. Get the cat as HOT as possible.

Anyways it smelled super rich at first and then it seems to not smell at all when warmed up now. I dont know if this will pass but i will take it again probably fryday when i get more money to do another smog check. Wondering if i should change to new spark plugs again and also change the oil just in case. Anyways thanks for the help always guys i really do appriciate i t.

New catalytic needs to be seasoned, can take a few hundred miles of clean driving. This seasoning will get the catalytic to its most efficient state. As noted bring the car in hot and run it right away. Does your EGR work? Have a tech move the EGR diaphragm and confirm it is bogging down the motor at idle.

Last time I tested my car, I checked it cold and watched the numbers as I rolled it at 40KMH. You would not believe how much better the emissions get, infinitely better. The HC and NOx were off the charts until the catalytic warmed up and the engine reached operating temp and leaned out properly. Yes, my cams are lumpy but these basic principles hold true regardless. My engine has 100% properly functioning Federal Emissions from bumper to bumper.

What color is the smoke? check the exhaust to see if there is oil in it. If the turbo is/ or has been blown and the exhaust hasn't been powerwashed out. you may have just caked up your cat again.

Hey did you finally pass? You have to PAY for Emmisions in Cali? wow, that sucks. Its FREE in ILLINOIS, but 95 and older = NO EMMISIONS!! ... But some ideals Let your cat warm up, drive around. Try using some heat in gas. Rich you check the injectors? How do the plugs look? Does your check engine light work? Any codes? Your cat and oxygen is good. Hows the idle?

Malfunctioning Fuel system. Fuel pressure too high or too low.
Leaky injector or fuel pressure regulator.
Bad or lazy Oxygen Sensor or sensors
Sensor Inputs.. Bad or Skewed Coolant temp sensor, mass air flow sensor, Map sensor, Throttle position sensor

Its charleyturbo again here. Sucks i had high nox numbers before and i didnt warm cat so i thaught ok i will do a few things. I changed the oil and filter, changed the sparkplugs to ngk uridium, didnt gap figured they were good but might look now. I took out egr valve but and cleaned but just sprayed starter fluid into housing part cause its hard to get too. Then i went to put egr valve back on and might of switched the vacume lines or something, not sure if this matters? Then when i went to do the test again the nox numbers were through the room, twice as bad as before...sucks. I only have till the end of the month too fix this or they can take my car even when parked and impound it forever... I have a lumpy idle and not sure why. I think i need to clean the egr valve again and im trying to clean my o2 sensor i have extra cause i cant get the other one on car off yet. I think maybe the o2 sensor is bad, what do you guys think? I wonder if this is the problem? Hate this smog crap every two years i spend around 300 bucks to try to pass and end up having to do illigal anyways i cant find illigal yet so this sucks....

That is federal emissions below.

Trace your vacuum lines, or switch them around, the car must run worse if they were switched anyways.

Sucks... but If you cant pass, You can always transfer plates to someone; wife, sibling.... give you another year or so before getting emmisions notice and just keep switching back & fourth lol... Before Illinois went with no smog tests 95 and older, I know someone who would do that :axe:

There are plenty of ways around it, that's just not one of them. ;)
