Post subject:  Quick question about the gas door lock!

Hey folks, I tried searching but didn't come up with much so I hope this hasn't been covered before. I have an '89 Dodge Colt (base model) that I've been going through and sorting out, I was able to retrieve the key-code (Dodge didn't have it in their database) from the passenger side lock cylinder to have some fresh new keys cut and that's good but none of them work in the gas door lock cylinder. Does the gas door use a different key than the front doors/ignition or is my cylinder shot? Thanks for the help and sorry for the noobish question!

Pop it open with the floor pull and then remove the cylinder. Remove and mark locations for the key code tabs and clean and reinsert. It is probably gummed up real good.

I don't have a floor pull, the car doesn't even have a cigarette lighter or passenger side mirror! Stage 1 race spec weight reduction or something right? At any rate, I did end up removing the lock cylinder from the gas door but the ignition key doesn't even seem to want to fit in there, there might be a bit of key or something broke in it but I can't tell. I'm going to try and blast it clean with some brake parts cleaner, take a better look, and go from there.

Just to be clear though, the ignition / door(s) key should work in that lock though right?

They use the same key. All 3 of my gas door locks have gave me problems, wiggle the key up and down just right to get them open.

Thanks for the tips fellas, I was able to get the lil' flapper door open and it appears part of a former key is chilling in there all by its lonesome. Time to see if I can pry that guy out! Thanks again.

They like to gum up. Soak it in gas for a day or so, then spray it out with brake cleaner. Once it starts working, don't forget to spray some lube back in there.

Today at work I was able to finally get this guy out... It was like playing "Operation" on expert! Took it home afterwards, blasted it with brake parts cleaner inside and out, ran the key through it a few times and then when it blasted it with some graphite lock lubricant. Good as new!

That'll definitely keep ya from opening it. The other thing that I do with every car I buy is get new keys made, never know how old or brittle the originals are.

Yeah, that was the first thing I did. Dodge couldn't find the key-code, and Mitsu couldn't look it up by VIN so I had to pop the passenger-side lock cylinder out to get the code off that. The new keys worked soooooooo much better than the copies that came with the car.
