Hello. At first I would like to sorry for my english, it isn't well. I'm from Poland and on wednesday I will buy Mitsubishi Mirage Turbo with 4g61T engine from my friend. This engine is a black magic for me, european :). I am member of polish Mitsubishi fans (forum.mitsumaniaki.pl) and Mitsubishi Colt fans (coltmania.pl).

Since 2 years I had Mitsubishi Colt CJ4A (1.6 N/A engine 66KW/90PS) but I had an accident in january this year. I have some questions to you:

- Mirage Turbo which I will buy on wednesday got 129000 miles on clocks - is it much or not for this engine?

- what about reliability 4g61T? Is it hard engine like more of old japan engines or not? Mirage Turbo which I'll buy is totally stock.

- what is common problems in 4g61t?

- I have to buy valve cover gasket because it's wet in my future Mirage. In Europe we've got Colt C50 with 4g61 N/A engine. Can I buy gasket from this engine? Or which engine is similiar to 4g61t from other Mitsubishi models?

Ive never owned a 4g61t but everyone keeps calling them the lil brother of the 4g63t. As long as you do maintenance and keep it stock. Should be very reliable. My old 1g laser was the most reliable car ive ever owned.

Very good engines, do the regular service and it will last. Biggest problem I seen is oil leaks, and broken timing belts because they were not changed on time

129,000 miles is nothing for a 4g61t, or any other Mitsubishi engine, as long as they have been well-maintained.

It's an extremely reliable engine. Just as reliable as a 4g63t, if not more reliable. It's an engine with a very short stroke, and very long rods. This means it doesn't put a lot of stress on the moving parts of the engine. As long as it had the oil changed regularly, it will keep on going for a long time.

Not having the timing belt changed regularly is the biggest thing that can go wrong. It needs to be changed every 60,000 miles. If it's not replaced, it can break, and that can destroy the engine. It is also a very good idea to replace the water pump at the same time as the timing belt, and all the seals, tensioners, and idler pullies that run the timing belt.

The valve cover gasket on the 4g61t is the same as a 4g61 N/A, and also the same as a 4g63T, or 4g63 N/A.

Buy it if it's in good shape and change the timing belt and the water pump/tensioner while you're in there.

#Theslo - this Mirage Turbo which I'll buy have oil leak from valve cover and what You say can be true about this engine. This car do 500km since 2 years and was burning out every 2 weaks. It's stay in the same place since 2 years and it doesn't got oil spot under him.

#CaptainTonus - fortunately I've got very good mechanic who is specialized in japan and korean cars, especially in Mitsubishi and Hyundai, it's our Mitsubishi Club mechanic, so after when I buy it, it first off go to him for fully review. So i have good thoughts about this car :)

Ufff, it's valve cover is the same like 4g63-engines so I can find it in Poland, because we've got much EVOs and Eclipses.

#Everyone - thanks a lot for this answers, You make smile on my face, beacause like I wrote - it's black magic for me at the moment, but I will read Your forum to better recognize this car :) I think I will open new topic when I buy it and show it to You :).

Thank You one more time :)

more questions:

- what about filters? From which engine model of Mitsubishi are there similiar (air, oil, fuel)? And from which car model from Mitsubishi is similiar (cabin air filter)?

- what about timing system? Is there the same like in 4g63T or not?

- which oil can You recommend for this engine? In 4g92 I had Motul Synergie 6100 10w40 but I think turbocharged engines need something special? Or not? :)

I use a 3000gt oil filter for mine as it's a little smaller and helps with cleance issues on bigger turbos.

151 belt teeth on a 61t and 153 on 63t if i remember right, so you must get a 61t belt, all other timming related parts are same as 63t. (except 61t has no balance shaft so you need not worry about it :D )

Oil weight/winter will depend on your weather and mods. Use full synthetic.

Btw my Mirage 61t had 211k miles before I swapped it out and it was strong even with a few hundered miles of 20g untuned abuse.

#Nocturnal - thank You for opinion :) about an oil this Mirage it got Castrol Magnatec 10w40 right now, but I have a bottle (5l) of Motul 10w40 at home, so I think this oil will be next in Mirage.

And good news - I bought it today :) I will open new treat on Your forum but later, so be patient :)

next question:

how much it fuel burns?

1. economic (to 3000rpm)/normal (70% of time to 3000rpm and sometimes to redline)/dynamic (80% redline/20% to 3000rpm) - at the city
2. normal - out of town (5 gear and speeds like 50-70miles per hour)

With DSM link you can trim everything up to get around 35-40mpg, but usually you will see around 25-30 real world. In the US most of us drive a 50/50 mix of highways and back streets(except for the country folk).
