Hi guys, Im curious do turbos die slowly and just start losing little boost each day? I have one which is getting pretty oily on the outside for some reason and used to be boosting 17 psi then down to 10. But now it is as low as 3-5 psi. , i think maybe it's a intercooler mesh hose rubbing on the fan area causing a leak only under boost. I hear a wistle and car seems to only want to go to five the most. Anways ill change the hose tommorow, tonight i finished changing up a knock sensor in the pooring rain. I didnt really get a good test to see if this helps with gas milage, but check light was still on and it seemed to only boost five still and it hesitated bad under excelleration too. Hmm guess ill have to check hose tommorow. Any ideas what all this could be? maybe ill switch computers see if that helps. Could my mass air be bad? how to check this again? please, thanks again, Charlie...

leaking turbo sounds like the seals are going bad.. but that wont affect the boost... that is somewhere in the line.. I bet u have a hole in 1 of the IC hoses.. stock turbos run at 9 psi at the low end.. if its any lower then theres a leak somewhere.

Hey guys, spent a few hours, trying to find the leaks in the hoses. I changed the suspected hose and ran from turbo to throttle body skipping intercooler. Funny thing is it still booted three o five psi and now i heard knocking bad at those booost levels, wierd. I just installed a knock sensor too bye the way. Oh and as i did this i briefley hit like sixty look up and see a motorcycle cop hiding with radar gun. Pulled over and explained all i did was get up to sixty and slowed rapedly just to test the boost leak. He didnt even hesitate and wrote the ticket for fifty five in forty. Great luck two blocks from house, crap. Anyways got home put intercooler piping back on, switched suspected hose to different ones and still got five boost with major hesitation hicups in power but this time no tick tick tick knocking. Then went home and changed the mass to another one, same thing. This is driving me nuts. Oh i compression checked all cylanders were 143 145 148 148 so i figure those are good numbers. Im thinking the little boost regulator restrictor next and the ecu. Could these be the problem? Any other ideas would be nice guys , thanks. Oh and i bypassed the catalitic converter shooting it into air without muffler, and WOW that was cool. Could here the turbo spooling and despooling and sounded like a diesel turbo v-8 truck, haha. It actually was worse power like that, then again i had a buddy of mine in car too so weight would be a factor here. Charlie.

take the intake pipe off..(from maf to turbo).. and look at the fins on the turbo.. look to see if they are chunked up/destroyed.. other than that its hard to diagnose without seeing/hearing it.. but definatly wierd it wont boost more.

update..

It's boosting 0 psi now, also when i drive i feel like sudden shudderings of power. I think i felt this way when i had a back end wheel of a turbo fall off completely if i remember correctly. Anyone else have a turbo blade fall off the back end of a turbo. Also seems to have a jerky feeeling when just lightly pushing the throttle... Does this sound like the turbo died? Charlie.

Usually when a turbo dies, the seal deteriorates inside and it turns into a smoke show every time you get into boost. When I had my wastegate disconnected on a 14b (letting the flapper flap, nothing holding it closed), it would only boost 5psi. Double check your wastegate, sometimes the little cotter pin can break off and it's not something you really notice without checking it.
