and I need some answers LOL.... so as some of you know I was gone for a few weeks last month.. before I left car ran great.. pulls to 18 psi no problems. ( mostly stock and still needing a full tune for it to hit its potential.)...

well when I got back I drove it to the store to pick up some food for a few days.. car ran great then also... 3 days later I drove it and noticed when I pulled up to a stop light it was smoking. ive driven it about 4 times since and each time it would smoke and was getting worse.

jump to this evening (before sunset) I drove about 4 miles...at every stop if would smoke out the exhaust and make people stay about 4 car lengths back.. a motorcycle rider 2-3 cars in front of me even turned around cause it smoked him out... weird thing is.. when I take off.. hit boost (even to 18 psi) there is no smoke.. but when I let off to slow ..and when I stop is when it gets real bad. after the 4 mile trip I pulled into my destination spot and barely any smoke..reved a few times and still not much.. when I left i drove a diff route and stopped at the store to get more food.. was about a 5 mile drive.. 0 smoke all the way home.. under boost or stopped.there was nothing.. im stumped why it only does it sometimes and why only since ive been back. any suggestions are welcome.. thanks much.

ive had it with this 61 so once taxes are in im building a 63 but till then im afraid to drive it much.

I rebuilt a motor with the Topline kit (came with the talon I bought so I thought I would try it. Car has been hitting 23lbs since then without issue (3 years ago)

I just ordered what i thought were nippon pistons for a 1g but they must have been more of the generic pistons many vendors sell. They come in a box from evergreen. I think thats where a lot of aftermarket stuff comes from now days. I paid about 90 or 100 bucks. They look pretty much identical to the oems. I had them side by side

I thought of going 2g piston 1g rod as well and i was going to buy these. My machinist didnt feel comfortable boring out the small end of the rod .040 thousands. ( 1mm) He felt he couldnt insure the two ends would be absolutely parallel. So in the end i couldnt buy nippon pistons and i looked everywhere for a nippon piston for a 1g but couldnt find any

it will be a couple months for sure untill i am running my new engine but we will see how it turns out

forgot to add.. the link u posted has this title.. JDM Nippon Racing DSM 2G PISTONS which is great... I searched e-bay for hours last night before I posted on here and there are alot that say upgraded pistons and npr ring set... and when u actually read and look at the ad there not npr pistons just the rings.. so there trying to dupe u into buying them thinking there npr pistons and rings .... so anyone buying these keep a eye out for this trick.

Turbo probably blew. I had that happen with a 14b, hit boost and instant smoke screen. People on the freeway weren't happy. lol

Lot of smoke at startup and then tapers off? Could be valve seals too.

non at startup.. only after a few min when i drive it about 1/8 mile is when I notice it starting.. tomorrow I plan to go start it and see how long (minute wise) it takes to start smoking while just idling.

so I started the car today just to let it idle and see if it smoked.. sure enough after about 2 min it barely started to smoke. reved it up a few time and out comes the big puff.... let it idle for about 10 min till fan came on ( so I knew it was up to temp). if I reved it up it would smoke on decell... sitting in the car holding it at 2k, 3k, and 4k for a few sec no smoke till I let off.. im stumped at this point so right now im off to the machine shop to drop off all my 63 parts to get checked out. hopefully there are enough parts i can use to build a motor for almost nothing lol. money saved will get me some cams and turbo rebuild kit.

car has been sitting 30 min since I got it up to temp.. so heading to the machine shop I will check for smoke and report back in a few hours.

almost forgot to post a reply lol.. so after it sat for the 30 min I headed out to the machine shop.. about 1/2 mile down the road I noticed some smoke..and for about 4-5 miles starting and stopping it would smoke while at the lights.. but only about half of what it was when i first started it.... then it stopped.. drove it the rest of the way to the shop (about another 5-6 miles) and all the way home. no smoke....

I did stick my finger in the exhaust that comes out the back of the car and it seemed like there was oil.. so tomorrow or wed im gonna pull the o2 out and stick some paper towel in the hole and see if it comes out oily.. if so I assume that would be the turbo?

still stumped as to why it only does it part time then stops.. machine shop guy doesnt understand it either.

so I unhooked the exhaust at the back of the DP (right before my cat).. and this is what I found in there. 1st pic is 1 swipe of my finger... 2nd is a shot of inside the DP.

so im assuming its coming thru the turbo seals.. thank god I have another turbo in the way tomorrow just need to rebuild it and toss it on and pray no more smoke.

Post subject:  Re: to smoke or not to smoke that is the question

so I ended up pulling the 14b off last weekend and it was covered inside with oil... swapped it out with a e3 16g I got on here and rebuilt it.... old stock 14b was smoking like willy nelson in a shed lol...

i let it warm up and drove it down the street and back... still smoked but only under hard boost but was only a a large puff.. compared to following me down the street lol...so I think its the left over oil in the DP burning off. will find out later when I drive it again....

when I parked it last week the boost was set at 17psi.. 2 pulls today both hit 22-24... so I turned it down till i get it re-tuned and make sure everything else is A ok.

i sure hope it runs good now.. but just in case I got a 2.0 shortblock im putting together.

thanks to all the suggestions..
