I just did an oil change on my colt vista and figured since there was so much more room near the oil filter area without the turbo setup I could fit a bigger filter there if I could find one. I did, it's a wix 51182, the normal application is some old 80's peugeot.
Here it is next to a standard 6 bolt dsm style filter, fram PH3950, fram filters suck though, napa 1381. I know there is allot of application carry over for these filters for various mitsu models so if you've got the room for it most of you guys on this forum could probably use this filter.
Clearance in the vista, I actually changed it with the engine hot and no burns.
Before anyone questions the why of this, most small stock style filters can only flow a limited about even with a new unclogged filter element and go into bypass mode before even half redline. The volume the filter must flow is proportional to rpm and oil pump output. The 4g engines at least have plenty of rpm potential and a pretty oversized oil pump stock. It is an old school circle track technique to fit the biggest quality filters you can to maximize filtration at higher rpms. Usually you need to do some remote mount trickery to accomplish this but in this instance there is plenty of room stock for a bigger filter and peugeot has kindly already made the filter for us.
