Okay guys I was thinking about doing some dash board changing. What do you think about modifying the dash with an Ipad for a head unit and after market speedometer cluster? spare dashes around? parts? ideas? is it too much?

These dashes usually crack to pieces. If yours is nice and crack free I'd leave it alone and get a bad one to experiment with first.

The speedo reads higher than is safe to drive a pop can from the '80s and the tach reads to 9,000 RPM. Was always sufficient for my needs.

I have no opinion on the head unit.

Unless you have way of converting the signal from the cable, or use a sensor different from the gear drive/cable at the trans and can decipher that input, then changing the speedometer makes no sense.

There are very nice units, one of which was eluded to in my members thread, by another member.

As the guys stated, it's a hella lot of work and won't fit in with a single piece of the car.

Because rally car or race car, maybe.

There are usually many more point to the car that require attention first.

Mainly transmission/shifter, suspension (bushings, struts, upper mounts dry rotting, sway bars) and brakes.

If the car has a 4g6X platform, it already outperforms the stock rubber bushings and engine mounts, and the suspension will be lagging also.

My thoughts on where to put the effort to start.

I did install a massive 5 gauge pod cluster just in front of my main dash cluster, mounted directly on the top plastic of the column.

It works for me, and did not modify anything other than a $5 piece of plastic that is available on every car from 1987/89-91, anywhere in the world. 8)

Should be able to use a 2g "electronic" speed sensor in the trans.

My odometer on my cluster is broken and I was thinking about replacing the whole thing or just getting a odometer guage. The only reason i proposed an Ipad head-unit is because I have a g1 ipad that I don't use and the middle column has some holes in it that Id like to do something with.

All very good insight though! Thanks guys.

Not worth the effort unless you want it to be something special or want to try some new ideas. Have you tried another cluster? Watch out for the gauge surround, they like to shatter with the push of a finger.

If only we ran OBDII on our CSMs, then an app and a bluetooth adapter would get you gauges.
