I have a chipped tooth on fifth, and need to know what other options work for a fifth gear/matching gear set, will work. If there is a fifth other than the FWD f5m33 from a DSM, that would be my reason for asking.

I heard something about people putting EVO 3 5th gear into F5M33...
Not sure about details..
Found this in 2sec search on google..

Aldo I dont have time to read it now. Try to research :)

I heard is taller gear so that should be good for highways cruise.
Only down side could be cost of it.

The AWD 5th gear is supposed to be higher, giving you a lower RPM at cruise.

So 5th gear set from what year AWD will drop in where the FWD 91 unit sits now?
No mods?

Supposed to be interchangable, just a taller gear. Put a FWD 5th in an AWD and you would never need to downshift to build boost!!

Jacks shows FWD 92-99 and all AWD as compatible for the taller 5th.
I have a 91 gear set. I may have a local option to compare with, I'll find out shortly.
If I know that 91 FWD DSM transmissions will accept this taller fifth, I may have two options for sourcing gears.

All 1g 5th gears will interchange. I ran a 5th from a 93 in my 90. Worked out great and dropped around 3-500 rpm cruise speed.

Old post, but I will be doing this before the SO this year. I hate buzzing around at near 4k to keep up with everyone. The reason Jack's lists 92-94 transmissions is because they are stronger. You should be able to grab the gears and parts at the end of any 1g AWD transmission and slide/nut them onto a 90-94 FWD transmission. I will really enjoy the 3-500 rpm drop. We have an AWD tranny with a blown center-diff that will be donating it's 5'th gear set to the bird.

I had a taller 5th gear on my Mirage. I honestly didn't like it. It was a F5M33 trans with a AWD 5th gear, which is a direct bolt-in affair. It lowered the RPM's so much that the car fell of its powerband in highway cruising, and I had to give it a lot of gas to pass people and things like that. The fact that the engine was lugging out of its powerband, and the fact that I had to give it more throttle to get around things, meant that my gas mileage didn't really improve any, if at all. I honestly hardly noticed a difference from the stock KM210. The F5M33 trans I installed already had the AWD gear put in when I installed it, so I can't tell you what the normal F5M33 5th gear was like. I will admit, it is nice cruising at lower RPM's in general. It's less noisy and vibrationy, but that's about it.
