I have done the Miata mod for my steering, but i have found another way for your safety !
First, the Miata mod :

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/article ... -rack.html

Second, how this stuff work :

The solution, soldering the torsion bar :

I have rebuild my steering rack and done this mod :

Add grease for rust protection only :

This post is amazing, first time I have heard of someone here actually welding the torsion bar.

Good to know that this is the mod required to maintain direct input, with no slop, when de-powering a power steering rack spool valve.

Especially to be more solid, imagine if the torsion bar break !
The power steering fluid help to keep pressure in the spool valve and the torsion bar work normally.
Drain the fluid and you have a weakened torsion bar system.

This is pretty cool, but miatas are all power racks hence the write up. It's a thousand times easier just to swap in a manual rack.

The manual rack requires more turns to go lock to lock. For a drag car this isn't a big deal but it is noticeable for a daily or autocrosser.

I am very aware of the gear ratios. It works out to be 3 full turns lock to lock for the power assisted rack and 4 1/4 turns lock to lock for the manual rack. I may do this in the future but since I just got an alignment it's gonna have to wait. Besides it isn't really that bad without the mod, I've certainly parked worse.
