Im having problems with my 89 colt turbo. The car will not start. The car is cranking but will still not start. Also before the car died for good, I would leave the car idle for about 5-7 mins then it would die. It also had a rough time starting. I have tried push starting and nothing. I took it to a shop to see if it was the starter or the alternator or both. The mechanic told me that the battery was fine, the alternator was fine but was charging low and needs to be replaced eventually, and that the starter seemed fine as well. He said that it might be a problem with the ECU. Anyone experience this? Any help would be great.

Thanks.

Sounds like your ECU.

It's your ECU.

This is how I've been starting my engine with a bad ECU:

- turn the ignition key to the "ON" position, but do not start the engine
- disconnect the middle and right wire harness connectors from the ECU
- reconnect and disconnect the middle wire harness connector on the ECU until you hear a continuous clicking noise in the engine compartment, then reconnect all the wire harnesses back to the ECU
- turn the key and start the engine; the idle will be low, so you might need to give it some gas, but it won't stall once you warm up the engine.

This is what I've been doing the past 2 weeks and it works. I have also replaced my caps, but it's still giving me trouble because there was alot of leakage on the PCB from the 47uF cap. I need a new ECU.

Ron

Thanks for the tip. Does anyone know if we can use the 1G DSM ECU's for the 89 C/M Turbo?

You can. although it will not idle right unless you have a 1G MAF and injectors...

Yeah an auto talon would work because the injectors are the same size so that makes sense... you would know better than I'm stuck with the 4g15 till this summer after my emissions check...

The computer monitors the o2 sensor at idle, so it can compensate for whatever injectors you have., to a point. If you go too large, it has difficulty compensating for those.

You can use one.

It would be best to get the injectors and MAF from the same model car, but not necessary. Just watch your EGT's and A/F ratio to make sure you're not running too lean at wide open throttle.

89-90 will plug in with no issues 91-94 you will need to mod the harness and it will work...
