Has anyone ever thought about it and could it be done? Would a 4g63 crack or even a 4g64 crank fit? It would produce a bunch of torque.

They will not fit. I'm the person building the "oldestcolt" aka Bill's engine. When the block came back from the engine shop they sent us a 4g63 crank and it did not fit. So we are now waiting for the crank to be sent back to us from Texas where it was sent by mistake.

WTF? The 4G61 block is almost identical to the 1G 4G63 block so yes it will fit. I would say that they sent you a 2G 4G63 crank which certainly wouldn't fit in the 1G style 4G61 bottom end.

The 4G63 crank in the 4G61 block would need custom length conrods to make it fit given the extra 13mm of stroke the 2.0 has. Although I cant see the point. You might as well just drop the 4G63 in there than pay the extra $$$ for custom bits.

From what i know the 4G61 63 and 64 all have the same size main journals. The 61 and 63 also have the same size connecting rod journals, but the 64's are a bit larger (2.087in vs 1.772). I'm not sure what the differences are between the 1g and 2g 4g63s. I was thinking a stroked 1.6 would be lighter than a 2.0 and offer just as good performance and power.

There's about ~6.5mm of extra block height on the 4G63 since both 4G61 & 63 motors use the same conrods. That's gonna be an extra 3kgs at most so there's very little in it. Also, and more importantly, a 63 crank in a 61 bottom end with short conrods would destroy the beautiful rod-stroke ratio of the 4G61 (2:1!!!) and end up with a 1.63:1 (along way from the optimum 1.72:1) and quite a good bit worse than the standard 4G63 (1.70:1). The lower the rod-stroke ratio is below 1.72:1 the more side loading that is applied to the piston side skirt creating alot more wear and wasting precious torque which also makes the engine more prone to catastrophic failure from a bent rod or cracked piston skirt.

edit: oh yeah, the rod-stroke ratio of the 4G64 is terrible at 1.56:1. 4G63/4 hybrids are even worse at 1.5:1.

The standard 4G61 is as near bulletproof a 1.6L motor as Ive ever seen or heard of (as far as the bottom end goes).

BTW - I had a look at a 2.xL Neon block at RPW the other day and I was super impressed by the strength of that design!

That 2.0L 420A Neon motor is considered trash by most DSM'ers. I think it's a great motor overall. It does have an Achilles heal in that Chrysler tended to use weak paper head gaskets.

What are the differences between that 2.0 and the 2.4 found in the PT cruisers and now the SVR-4?(In turbo-goodness form). Is it the same design, or a completely different setup? Just curious more than anything else, but may consider one of those hopped-up neons when the frenzy dies off a bit (and a relative kicks the bucket)

From what I've been able to tell the 2.4L turbo is just a bored and stroked 2.0L. I don't know it's engine code so I could be wrong, but they look too similar to be totally different designs.

Oh yeah the new neon is the SRT-4

There's been some discussion on the Mirage Performance board about 420As... It probably wouldn't be too much work to drop one in a 3G or 4G (especially from a DSM). They put out some nice power in naturally aspirated form, but I've also heard some bad things about their reliability.
