I tried to run my 89 colt through the automatic car wash today and the under carriage hit the guide rail. Is this common?

My left front control arm rubs on the rail. I didn't mind that so much, but when I got 16" wheels, the rail started rubbing off my inboard wheel weights.

Yup, that's how they are. It's actually the control arm that rubs.
