I was thinking about using the C10 4wd Colt wagon rear suspension since its the same separate shock/strut as mine (even if I were to go AWD I would try this) and using a DSM rear end with LSD and keeping the rear independant instead of using say a Supra's/Conquest's heavyyy solid axle. I would aslo think about making a better reinforcement and mustache bar for the rear end as well. Yeah the custom driveshaft comes into play, but its only lengths and splines that need to be matched up.. Its not really that hard to figure out, its getting the stuff to do it.
Starions/Conquests are IRS, as far as I knew. I wouldn't want to trust a stock DSM rear-diff to handle 100% of the power going to it.

P.S. the R154 Supra trans was duplicated by GM and is now in the Chevy Colorado and Solstice/Sky turbos.
I know this. The AE5, or whatever. They're supposedly stronger, too.
Oh yeah I forgot, but they're heavy as hell and huge so I consider it solid.. lmao. Yeah its the Aisin 5 Speed they call it IIRC and has stronger metal for the gears. I wouldn't use a stock DSM rear diff, but I would use one like it. I'm going for lighter weight as well. Not to have a 2600+ pound pig.

If it were me, I'd rather have something heavier that didn't break all the time...especially with the kind of torque than an SRT-4 motor can make

This is true buttttt eh *shrugs* if I can get a built one I'm sure it would be fine. Kicking around the idea still. All I'm concerned about is fabbing a front cradle and what I would use for the steering situation. Should I look at the Colt Galant, Lancer Celeste perhaps or a Starion for some ideas? The ideal thing would be to find a Plymouth Arrow/Lancer Celeste, but that's a needle in a haystack weighing only 2,000 pounds!

Actually looking into it, the setup will go beautifully like this: SRT-4 engine mounted ontop of Saturn Sky turbo engine cradle, Jeep liberty bellhousing on the Aisin AR-5, Sky driveshaft and rear differential. Would be an amazing setup if you could get the rear suspension to fit as well being it is an independent double wishbone. There's less cutting involved in a Colt because the center is already tunneled for a driveshaft. It could work on a Neon but the weight of the car will be more than if it were in a Colt.
