Can we use starters from other Mitsubishi models? Can we still buy this new in the local dealership? Any remanufactured brands available? I've been seeing 2 types that show 2 diff KW's? Which one should I get ?

4g6X starters, FWD or AWD, the only difference was how the starter was clocked due to the starter plate orientation differences FWD to AWD bellhousings.
Essentially any 89-94 4g6x motor really.

I see 4g15's listed above and likely the fitment is identical too, I've just never had them side by side. The Colt starters are not gear reduction style and you would have to research the KW from the FSM.

Some Galants E33/38 match up also to the Turbo model 1.2Kw starter.

Some starters had more KW's, but it doesn't really matter. Find the highest Kw model from the cross reference, check a picture online to compare it to what you have, and voila!

Unless explicitly stated it would work, be doubtful of 95+ starters, the electronics changed mid year 94.5+ but the starter may be the same if nothing else changed on the motor/bellhousings, starter plate following the split point.

I found alot of cross reference with starters in ASA but it's the KW difference that makes for only half the models I expected, to match up. 4g15's did not match up with the C53a starter, but it is likely a lot of our swap guys are using their original Mitsu 4g15 starters to wind up their 4g63's.

I have had issues mixing and matching awd/fwd starters. Awd flywheel is smaller by 4 teeth and the tip of the awd starter is shorter than the fwd starter.

Hmmm, prettys sure Tonus told us about starters being identical in usage ... it's a long while a go type memory.

I have a an AWD starter here, that I was going to use in my FWD applicatiom KM210 and FWD DSM flywheel setup. My FWD starter may be going bad.

I know the starter plate was the only main difference between the two, and sometimes why people had issues with engagement, but I did not know about any nose and gear engagement depth issues.

DSM tuners reputable member posting this information:

Model for model along with corresponding model years, the starters are the same. All 1G AWD cars use the same starter as the 1G FWD turbo cars with a manual transmission.
Starter part #'s per another guy from the web. Automatic starters apparently have a deeper plunge depth/engagement to hit the flexplate properly?? <- not confirmed but plausible if they are spaced differently because of their position on the torque converter, so very likely this is the case.

thomcasey, I wonder which starter you had whereby the noses were different depths?

Starter #'s md172860 and md172861 are all 1.2KW gear reduction type starters.

Checked ASA tonight, this is the Colt/Mirage 4g61t starter part #

89 FWD C53A KM210 5 spd starter = 172860

Colt/Mirage/Summit 4G15 - 3,4, and 5 speeds transmission/transaxles:

1989-92 C52 4g15 cars got 0.7-0.9 kW direct drive starters, not Gear Reduction 1.2 kW models like the 4G6X motors.

If someone was to measure the gap between the starter plate edge (with the bellhousing in place), to the far edge of the flywheel teeth, then you start to get an idea of how far the gear has to "plunge" in the nose of the starter. If your starter does not have sufficient plunge depth, try one that is supposed to for the application at hand; ie the transmission and matched flywheel you are using. Presumably you are matching a FWD flywheel and FWD bellhousing, to a FWD starter. Or you are using AWD parts in their entirety, to make things jive.

I have used the same starter on my sedan with 3 different transmissions and the same 6 bolt engine. AWD switchable, FWD KM210, AWD W5M33. The only things I changed where the flywheels, AWD vs FWD, and the starter plates. I believe the 4g15 starter was different, IIRC.

I searched the web using my starter number for the 91 AWD that I have as a substitute if my 89 FWD does not check out.

Here is what I got on a part search. Website was http://www.sanmul.com/421-m1t70481.html

89 FWD C53A KM210 5 spd starter = MD172860

91 AWD D(whatever turbo DSM code goes here) W5M33 = MD172860

All these parts codes appear interchangeable via the listing above:

MITSUBISHI MD099667
MITSUBISHI MD162839
MITSUBISHI MD172860
MITSUBISHI MD174483

MD099667 (Original Part Number) = MD172860 (Superceded) = 1989 C53A 4g61T (Per ASA)

whats the different between reduction starters compared to direct drive? are the latter better option? been hearing about this reduction starter.
yes I been seeing those 2 kinds of voltage avail. can the 4g15 use the 4g6x starters that has those 1.2KW

Gear reduction provides more torque for the same electrical output as a direct drive unit.
It looks a little like transmission internals where that too is speed down , torque up situation.

The starters have the same speed when cranking the motor but a 4g6x rotating assembly takes more torque to spin an get up to appropriate speed to make the starting/operating threshold.

Unless the 4g15 starter has the same clocking of the nose, same depth of engagement for the gear to meet the flywheel/flex plate, then a 4g6x starter would not work as an upgrade.

If for some reason a hybrid of the two could be made (just for the fun of it) it would be funny to see a 4g15 nose comes and some guys mates to a 4g6x set of guts. Better off getting a direct replacement.
