Hey im just wondering if the elantra 4g61 head will work with a 6 bolt 4g63 block. I hear the 1.8L elantra heads work...what about 1.6L??? Are the valves and port sizes way smaller?

im trying to build up a 4g63 cheap as possible and i have a good block but no head.

Yes, they will work. But they dont flow as much. just look for a 2.0 one.

Smaller CC and smaller ports, better off with a 4G67 head if you want the compression bumped up and larger ports. Best option for reasons of knock if you can't tune it completely with say a standalone, would be the stock head. There are tons of stock 4G63 heads out there, just takes some time to find a good one I guess.

The Elantra heads stamped "1.6L" are the same as equipped to both the 1.6L and 1.8L Hyundai engines. They are all "big port"/"small combustion chamber" heads AFAIK. That is, the port sizing is the same as 1G 4G63 heads however it will result in a little bit more static compression.

They would work fine on a 4G63T so long as the tune can take a little more compression. Worst case you'll have to retune.

My 1.8 Elantra GLS has the head marked 1.6L on it. I figured it was a timing belt victim and someone just tossed on a 1.6 head and called it a day. So you're saying it may have came on there?

I'm lost now. Is this the head that bumps the compression up 1 on the 4G63's? In other words if I use this head on a 1g 4G63 engine will my C/R be 8.8 to 1?

So, xlr8 would this only apply to continental deliveries to AUS/NZ versions of the Lantra versus the North American Elantra, or both versions shipped to different markets?

Well AFAIK I've never heard of a 1.6L or 1.8L (E)lantra head being anything other than that stamped with a "1.6L" on the side. This goes for the head on my 4G61T which is from a 1.6L Lantra, the head on my 1.8L Lantra, all the Hyundai's I've seen in Oz and a lot of anecdotal evidence from the US.

What 89Mirageman says also backs this up.

I cant say what the 4G63 2.0L Sonatas had since I've never seen a motor from one of them in person.

There were dohc Sonatas as well. The local junkyard has two or three of them.

As a matter of fact the next time I'm there I plan to look at a few 1.8 Elantras to see what head they have. If they all say 1.6L on them I think its safe to say mine came that way.

We stripped a full 1993 Canadian Delivered Elantra at the first site meet back in 2004(2005?) and I remember Paul got the head to replace his turbo head with, but I cannot remember what markings were on the side of the head. I wonder if any photos still remain of that cylinder head, as we weren't dissecting every part to the n'th degree that day.

Your thinking of the early 90's model Sonata that came with the SOHC 4G64. The later models had a DOHC 2.0L NA 4G63. There are a few around with 4G63T conversion in them.

Today, I went to the local junkyard, and I found a few elantras in there. I found a 1992 with a DOHC motor that said 1.6L on the side of the head. I also found a 1994 elantra DOHC motor that said 1.8L on the side of the head. I have a 4G61T in my mirage, which head do I need to put on my car, to keep the compression the same, but gain the airflow of a 2.0 head? I forgot... Thanks.

Pull the intake off the 1.6L DOHC just to confirm the intake port sizing, but I think you want to 4g67 head off the DOHC 2.4L Sonata's of roughly 1994 vintage IIRC. I thought most of the 1.6/1.8L combos were using smaller port heads on them up in Canada, but I'd love to be proved wrong whether it is an American or Canadian thing (with both most likely being delivered the same way). A 4g67 head has the large intake/exhaust ports but the smaller combustion chamber sizing, just like the 1.6L had.
